Government Asks Canada to Restart Aid Programs

BY SEK ODOM | SEPTEMBER 3, 2016

The Foreign Affairs Ministry used a meeting with top Canadian diplomats on Friday to request that the country resume aid to Cambodia, four years after Ottawa’s last development programs ended.

Canada reopened a tiny Phnom Penh diplomatic office in December, after closing its embassy in 2009, saying at the time that it hoped to strengthen trade and diplomatic relations with Cambodia.

On Friday, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion met with his Cambodian counterpart, Prak Sokhonn, and Prime Minister HE as part of a seven-day diplomatic junket to Cambodia and Vietnam.

The meeting between Mr. Sokhonn and Mr. Dion “strengthened the cooperation between Cambodia and Canada,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry told reporters afterward.

“His Excellency the Minister of Cambodia requested Canada provide funds for preventing the impact of climate change, and for clearing mines in Cambodia,” he said.

Canada denies reports of additional aid to Cambodia
Wed, 7 September 2016

The Canadian diplomatic office has denied local media reports that Canada had agreed to deliver extra aid money to Cambodia.

In a press release, Foreign Minister Prak Sokhon said that Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Stéphane Dion expressed interest in his proposal that “Canada will continue to provide aid to Cambodia on mine clearing activities”.

Francis Huot, Canadian Chargé d’Affaires, said “there was a mistake reported over the weekend in a few media outlets”, and reiterated that Canada would not be providing any additional aid, as had been suggested in those reports...

Apparently the media quoted the Cambodian government spokesman, without first checking with the Canadians. Whoops.
As part of Friday’s meeting, “the Canadian government promised to give funds to clear mines in Cambodia,” the [ Foreign Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry] said, later adding that the Canadians had also agreed to give an unspecified amount to climate change mitigation efforts...

Canadian officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday’s meeting.

Jesus... KIR has one thing right: the flag should have an outreached palm on it instead of Angkor Wat. Seems kind of ballsy to be asking additional countries for aid when you're already getting millions upon millions from the EU, US, Japan/China/Korea and various other countries such as Australia. Hopefully Canada doesn't give out anything.

Canada seems to have more sense than Australia.
But on the other hand, if you don't ask, you don't get... :mulled:

The Canadians MIGHT consider appointing leading Oppositionists as consultants, ensuring every CDN$ is wisely and honestly spent.

That would get a message across to the small % of Cambodians who take a real interest in what's going on above their heads.
