Old apartment owners in Phnom Penh’s BKK1 area are facing a threat from big condominium developers who are trying to edge them out of the lucrative real estate market in the area.

Kim Heang, president of the Cambodian Valuers and Estate Agents Association, said the market for apartments had reached a stage where “the big fish were swallowing small ones”.

“Small apartments in the BKK1 area which are not more than five stories high and poorly serviced could be bought over by developers and demolished to make way for high-rise modern condominiums,” said Mr. Heang.

“These would be more stylish and attract better buyers in the market,” he added.
