A Secret Trial in Britain

Post by mammothboy2 »

This nasty fellow deserves to be exiled to Rockall or, better still, to Pluto ...

... however, the very term 'secret trial' makes one shudder. Even those tried for treason - like William Joyce, the best-known
"Lord Haw-Haw"* - had public trials.

* William Joyce had a County Cork snarl, nothing at all like the music-hall posh accent of Captain Baillie-Stewart, the
original "Lord Haw-Haw." Such is the indolence of journalists that the same moniker was used for Baillie-Stewart,
John Amery and William Joyce.

A correction is needed. This is from COMMENT IS FREE in the Grauniad:

His trial wasn't secret. It was at the Old Bailey and I sat in the public gallery and listened to some of it.

There were reporting restrictions. He was actually convicted last month following a four week trial at the Old Bailey. The details have only just been made public yesterday.

That is true. But he didn't have a secret trial as stated in the article.

That's because any reporting could have prejudiced the subsequent trial of one of his followers. That trial has now concluded, so media restrictions have been lifted.

It's standard practice when it comes to related trials.
