Otherwise safe, Richard?phuketrichard wrote:Took the trip from SR to PP back in 2006. Arranged a ticket thru the hotel, $25
mini bus picked us up an took us to the pier
75% westerners ( yes, even back than)
1st hour was nice ( but fucking LOUD engine)
than 4 hours of total boredom when ur out in the middle of the lake
last hour was nice as we approached the PP pier ( back than it was at the end of street 108)
once, ok, never again.
If you take the sunset cruises in PP they are fun an nice/cheap to go with a few friends.

Better then sitting on the boat for 8 hours with the SR - BTB boat is just doom a floating village tour from siam reap.diesel wrote:boattrip pp - sr is fucked up, but i made also the boattrip sr- battambang and that was really a nice boattrip through the floating villages

Sounds like the life of the party. Met a guy like that at Quealy's the other night, warned us about a whole lot of things in Cambodia that I reckon happen mostly in his fantasies.nightmare.believer wrote:Fun fucker full of wisdom, that guy.

Being locked inside one of these for several hours with several dozen others. It doesn't take long to get stuffy inside that thing.StroppyChops wrote:What was fupped about it, diesel?diesel wrote:boattrip pp - sr is fucked up, but i made also the boattrip sr- battambang and that was really a nice boattrip through the floating villages

I had a great experience going SR to PP on one of those boats. You can sit on the roof the whole way and enjoy the breeze and good scenery (use sunscreen!). Some great photography is possible if you are into it and have a decent zoom/wide angle. In recent years, the 'port' at the SR end has just become a money making scam, where they tax you as you arrive at the lake heading TO PP. If you go PP to SR you might avoid this, but the tuk tuk mafia have you by the balls. You are still about 6km or more from town, and at their mercy. If you can arrange a hotel pick up, that might be a good solution, and less hassle.
The boat is around $30 if I recall, and although there are some fine views, the Battambang trip is better. Taking the Giant Ibis to SR then the boat to Battambang or an afternoon on the lake on a boat can be fun, checking out the Floating Viets and croc pits. Honey pot tourism though. Other, more 'unique' short trips can be found on the lake, with a bit of research.

Cheers UT. Thanks for the comprehensive response, Rick, that was the sort of info I was after.

It's a satisfactory trip at best in ideal conditions. Five potential problems:
1) The boat is packed full and everyone has lots of bags on the roof, forcing some people to stay inside the whole trip.
2) The weather turns to shit and you are forced inside the boat with the mass of people, 3 to each bench seat that can barely hold two.
3) The seas get rough and its stuffy, humid and smelly inside with BO and diesel engine fumes, and then people start to get seasick and puke into the little black bags. Floating vomitorium with nowhere to hide.
4) The boats I have been on have been absolutely crawling with cockroaches. Not a few. Many thousands. This was mostly on the Koh Kong to SHV trips (back when the boat was the only option), but they were on the PP to SR trip too.
5) Twice I have been on those boats when the engines failed. Can add 4+ miserable hours to your already long trip.

Thanks SD. Trying to decide if it's one of those things you just have to do once for the experience. We had a trip through a storm in a jet boat out to Phi Phi Island that literally nearly killed us but I don't think either of us regret it. We also took the sleeper train from Hanoi to Danang, but that's a whole other story.

I forgot one...take that boat trip when the Tonle Sap is at its low levels and add 3 hours to the trip, as the boatman slowly navigates the shallows.StroppyChops wrote:Thanks SD.
