Favorite areas of Phnom Penh for living?
Re: Favorite areas of Phnom Penh for living?
I'm thinking the same thing, but moving to PP from Bangkok. I've spent a lot of time over the last months watching the rental market and picking up tips about where to live. I know one thing: I don't want to live "downtown" in the bar district anymore. But then I'm a bit older than Jamie. LOL
For a long time I resisted the idea of moving to the Tuol Tom Poung area, but I think this is where I'll roost. I tend to focus on where I can buy most of my groceries without using tuktuks (although I will get a moto PDQ). TTP area in the 400s has nearby Superduper and Angkor Mart, with Aeon Mall east of there and Sovanna west of there. In the daytime, one can moto to Thai Huot, Pencil and Paragon (for what, I don't know LOL) or Orussey Market. Digby's Butchers on 306 comes well recommended.
There's apparently a nascent bar and restaurant spurt in the area of the 400s. I don't always want to go all the way to say 172 just for a couple of beers.
Location is flexible because it always comes down to the right place for the right price. But it's still going to be TTP area. I do like Tonle Bassac area but it's a bit expensive.

TTP is a good choice.

On my next visit to PP later this month, I"m going to spend a couple of hotel nights out in TTP. Nothing like jumping in at the deep end.

salads?
you must be mad or a noob.
better just take a cipro 500 after every lettuce leaf you eat.
i like living in chroy changva
it is expensive if you use tuktuks.
if you have a bike it is only 10 mins to riverside.
as you cross the bridge the temp often drops 3-5 degrees, it is quiet, leafy, and some of the places here are on big blocks of land.
it is hard to find a house over here, everything is for sale.
i got my rental place as a derelict property and spent far too much renovating.

Where I live is very quiet, and I'm not saying where because I want it to stay that way.
frank lee bent's area is nice.
Some parts of Chbar Ampouv are nice.
TTP is almost gentrified now, I was there when it was still out of the way, Gen Mac can tell you about the great place I rented for $110/month, aircon, cable, furnished, huge balcony. Ah well.

yeah chbar ampouv and all along the river after that big tv antenna.
prek po road just off the national highway is very nice, a real prime location off the city beat, but fairly close.
i have not been to arey ksatr just across from koh pich - that could be a possibility if you hate city life but need easy access.
i am thinking of spending part of my time in SV.
given i rarely leave my room at home while working i could be anywhere.

Haha Frank, I've been traveling constantly since May and I still do what I can to get my veggies for the day. Having a real kitchen and maybe a grocery store will help. I did find a $4 salad at Pepper Tree that wasn't terrible.
I probably wouldn't want a quiet area anyway though. My last home was Thonglor in Bangkok which of course gave me all the metropolitan things I could want. I know things are different in Phnom Penh but I was just wondering if there was a area that gave some kind of approximation of the "downtown" megacity experience. Doesn't sound like that's the case. I'll go see BKK1 this week

Re: Favorite areas of Phnom Penh for living?
my comments on quiet areas on the fringe were directed at those who may be like myself rather than at the original post.
favorite is very subjective. i can't bear the noise over there, and the heat.
still low rise and spread out in PP.
population doubled in 5 years, but still only shy of 2 mill
best cultivate microgreens here as all leafy veg is contaminated with shit or chems unless you go to natural gardens or another organic grocery.
it is dire and pervasive- no joke. take your mbendazole after six months and observe the results prior to flushing.
nasty rabbit food.

The area on the southern side of Sihanouk Blvd, between Monivong and 51 St / Wat Lanka. Lots of restaurants of varying tastes, bars, gym, walking distance to Lucky Supermarket on Sihanouk Blvd.
