Arrests and rescue in Phnom Penh: Once more, Cambodian women headed for the bride-market in China are "rescued" by the anti-Human Trafficking unit. It is not known if the women involved wished to be rescued, nor if they will simply try again once they are released. However, in this case, the victims included two minors.

Four in court for bride trafficking
4 June 2018
A woman referred to as the “mastermind” and three men were presented before Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Sunday for allegedly trafficking 30 women to China for marriage.

The National Police’s Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Unit made the arrests on Thursday together with the Phnom Penh Municipal Court and Kampong Speu provincial police after investigations were launched following complaints from victims.

The suspects and evidence were sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal court on Sunday.

Kampong Speu provincial monitor for human rights group Adhoc, An Phin, said the NGO had so far received five complaints from victims’ families after their daughters were tricked into going to China. He said the brokers recruited women on the promise of work in China, with wages of between $1,000 and $1,500 per month.

But when they arrived there, they were forced to marry local men. Some, he said, were even forced to marry more than one man. However, Phin disputed the National Police’s figure on how much the women were offered for.

“After the first marriage, some of the women were sold to a second Chinese man. The women were offered to the men at between $15,000 and $20,000 each,” he claimed.

Welcoming the crackdown, he called on the court to take full legal action against the suspects, and provide compensation to the victims and their families.

The Chinese in Cambodia will be trafficking lots of women. Let’s hope the government moves to protect Khmer women against abuse. But the Chinese money will prevail I think.

10 July 2018
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Chum Sounry said yesterday that the Cambodian embassy in China cooperated with Chinese police to rescue seven Cambodian women who were cheated and brought in by brokers to get married illegally.

The Cambodian Consulate General in China’s Xi’an city also intervened and prepared the repatriation of a Cambodian woman who was cheated by brokers and was detained by Chinese authorities on charges of residing illegally. The arrived in the country between July 3 and July 5.

The Cambodian embassy in Vietnam also helped four Cambodian women who were cheated by brokers in their bid to get married in China.

Mr Sounry said, “These women were transported by the brokers from Cambodia to Vietnam at the end of June and intended to continue crossing the border to China. They were rescued by the Vietnamese authorities in time. The Cambodian embassy also provided accommodation and food to them, and prepared repatriation to Cambodia.”

China sex trafficking trial begins
July 20, 2018
Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday began the trial of a 33-year-old Cambodian woman accused of being the leader of a gang that traffickedwomen to China.

Presiding Judge San Sophath said yesterday that Sou Chamroeun, also known as Sou Sopheap or Lili, was charged last year with human trafficking and faces up to 15 years if convicted.

Judge Sophath said that in August, Ms Chamroeun visited Cambodia from China, where she lived with her husband, and persuaded 22-year-old Srey Mao to work in the garment sector in China.

The accused later revealed to the victim that she was to work at a massage parlour rather than in a garment factory, the judge said.

He added that a complaint was filed by the victim, prompting police to set up a sting operation to nab the accused.

On the day set for Ms Mao’s departure, the accused had arranged a bus for the victim to Ho Chi Minh city, where she would board a flight to China. However, Phnom Penh anti-human trafficking and juvenile protection police intercepted the accused and arrested her on the morning of August 17.

According to a court document obtained yesterday, between 2014 and 2018 Ms Chamroeun allegedly sold 30 Cambodian women to men in China for marriage.

15 000 - 20 000 USD??? Thats a lot of money. Is this correct? Or just for the court case? From some documentary I saw, Chinese in rural china have very low income. If thats true. I would guess is around 5-10K. But I might be wrong. If they have 20K to spend why they dont come to Cambodia and do a direct find?? Something doesnt sound correct here.
