Home made tick spray

Post by taabarang »

Does any dog owner know of an effective spray made from local Ingredients? A store in town sells a vaccine but I hate to inject chemicals I don't know sold by a clerk who also doesn't know. My poor dog thanks you.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

you could try citronella from the vet supply. It is a natural essential oil. probably have to apply daily. smells like lemon.
Alternately there is a pour on systemic under the name of Frontline among other names.
lasts for a month, allegedly non toxic and works very well for fleas and ticks.

any vet supply should sell it

incident reporting shows fairly low toxicity for dogs and cats.
if you go the citronella route you can add some mineral oil and alcohol to give it persistence and a bit of penetration.

i used to use this on my jersey cows, works well if applied daily..

I was talking to a dog owner who only uses coconut oil on their dog, I think 2-3 times a week and the dog never has any tick problems.
You can also get a spray like this; http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/ ... 99034.aspx
The type sold in Phnom Penh is called 'Pezzio', I think it's $10.50
I use this on our dogs paws 2 times a week as she was starting to get problems, and spraying it on the paw will put it on the coat if scratching.
Another good thing for the dog is fish oil like this -
Not really a direct medicine but 3 or 4 a week quickly builds up the coat and shine and helps keeps ticks away.

Vaccine meds for ticks, they do a once a week treatment over 3 weeks which seems to be easier on the dog. Lasts about 4 months but I guess depending on the environment.

I would also say getting the right type of brush for the dog is probably most effective.

I assume you're talking about a wire brush with the teeth spaced closely together.

In the benighted backwoods just below the Ozarks ( crosstimbers ) ticks thrive as does the truly diabolical chigger. In spring and early summer, we would eat elemental sulfur tablets, fed them to the dogs too.
Not sure if it REALLY works but most folks who led outdoor lives used to do this.

I camped for about two months just south of Mammoth Springs. Ticks, fleas, and rednecks everywhere. I even caught a water moccasin while fly fishing. Lovely place but glad as hell I didn't buy land there.
