who is it your worried about losing

everyone wins

Thailand gets its cheap labor at an lower than Thai costs
workers get legality, protection and insurance

BTW Honda announced that they are firing over 25,0000 employees from their production plant because of rising costs and lower car sales.
IF the companies drop employees because of the increased cost of employing legal workers vs illegal, then the workers have no jobs to return to. so both... because without one the other doesn't exists.

And as soi dog said, thanks for proving my point...
Honda is laying off cause of poor sales, nothing to do with who they employee
As Cowboy said its the 1st car buyers and the market is flooded with second hand cars cause the 1st time buyers can not meet their payments.

PLUS
here in phuket many locals brought new cars, got the green plates ( so they can operate as taxis) and now find there are not enough tourists to warrant so many taxis and hence cant make their monthly payments.

as to legal vs illegal
be aware Cambodians, be they legal or illegal , will always earn less than their thai counterparts an do the jobs that the thais wont.

Same reason most of the construction is done by Burmese labor

Undoubtedly a result of the temporary stimulated demand created by another populist ill thought out policy by the Yingluck regime - the first car scheme. Car's bought on credit and now the repossession rate effect is being felt by the collapse in second hand car prices, a great time to buy a used car. The day a company like Honda relocates manufacturing to Cambodia things will truly have moved forward, it's high end imported sales franchises for the lucky few for the foreseeable future I suspect.
Um, while some were for domestic markets they were mostly manufacturing for export...
Not the case. Honda can produce 300,000 units annually and the latest target was for 160,000 to be sold domestically, so you could probably at best say it's evens. The cut's are most definately due to weak domestic demand.

To be honest until the whole migrant labour issue came up with what has happened in the last 2 weeks, I wasn't aware of the numbers involved. It's stimulated an interesting discussion and the way in which it impacts the Thai/Cambodian economic & political dynamic is really interesting to see played out.

...Long-time observers have said the Thai military was using these Cambodians to dismantle a power base that was forged around cheap and illegal labor, established and run by a rival institution (the Thai police), who have traditionally favored the governments of Yingluck Shinawatra and her brother Thaksin.

Both leaders were ousted in military coups...

...The Thai military has tried to defend itself, arguing there was no crackdown on illegal immigrants. Comprehending the army’s handling of Thailand since the May 22 coup has been challenging. Attempts by the junta to convince the world that it, in fact, did not stage a coup were unconvincing, as was ordering Thais to smile and have fun...

Yep --- exactly what I suggested on this thread two days ago:

"Thailand does have a lower end labor shortage but it is not nearly as bad as many state. The real issue has been giving "Elite" business owners (often but not always Thaskin Cronies) access to low cost labor at levels Thais find unappealing."

IN a nutshell, the army did what it had to do,
Ban democracy and bring in censorship?

YES; if that stops the fighting an allows things to cool down!!!
phuketrichard wrote: Most thais are very happy ( notice there have been no anti coup demonstrations for weeks)
They are scared to demonstrate. I've seen them interviewed by the BBC.

Do you watch thai news> see the many many thais giving flowers to the Army?
even in Ubon thani , a stronghold for the red shirts they held a big party an everyone came out into the streets and burned their red shirts.

as you might recall during the past 6 months there have been reports (some unconfirmed) of Cambodian mercenaries entering Thailand and using the demonstrations to cause havoc.
Any evidence of that, and why Khmers would do so?

T
he same night, 5 Cambodians were caught attempting to torch the main anti-regime protest stage at Democracy Monument, according to Thai PBS.

While the regime cannot openly confront the protesters with excessive violence in fear of justifying the army to mobilize and oust the regime, it has in the past, and is now resorting to the use of hired thugs and professional mercenaries to carry out deadly attacks in its stead. Regime gunmen have already been photographed and captured on video having triggered the first deadly violence of the protests last week.

With the capture of 5 Cambodians attempting to commit arson, admitting that they were hired to do so, it exposes what might be just the leading edge of a large campaign of violence being organized by the regime. The regime’s ties to the neighboring dictatorship of HE of Cambodia are well known within Thailand, however little, if ever covered by the Western press.
They were hired by Thias!!! You know that not everything in an entire country is ordered by the government? Any evidence of " professional mercenaries"?

" might be just the leading edge of a large campaign of violence" - lol.

JUST IN:
to assist Cambodians that want to return to their jobs in Thailand
Prime Minster HE yesterday issued a sub-decree mandating that passports for migrant workers and those studying abroad on scholarship cost only $4, and that the passports be delivered to applicants in no more than 20 days.

The announcement came after some 200,000 undocumented migrant workers streamed back into Cambodia from Thailand due to a crackdown on illegal labourers there.

The mandate is similar to past sub-decrees setting the price of passports for workers and students at $24.
http://www.phnompenhpost.com/post-weeke ... orts-cut-4

This is one reason that there are so many illegal migrant workers ( the price of passports was way out of line)

So, with the new one stop service an cheap passports i expect the exodus will reverse in the next 3 weeks... :beer3:

hahahahahaha.

I seriously would take you up on that as a bet. It had previously been decreed that they were only $24... that's not way out of line and they STILL didn't get them. Want to know why? The system for getting them is broken. And even if by some miracle this was actually followed they'd still take 6 months to produce that many all coming in at once.

You just soak up gov't propaganda like a sponge don't you...

HE is making himself look good, so that when the returning workers end up screwed he can point the fingers elsewhere... likely at THEM even though his decree didn't make it any easier to get their passports because the guy at the office wanted a $100 bribe to process it.

Are you contradicting yourself? You posted a piece mentioning a crackdown, yet said in another thread , said that they just left !
