Hundreds of police posted near CNRP rally for Sokha

Wed, 15 June 2016
Meas Sokchea and Ananth Baliga

As CNRP acting president Kem Sokha once again refused to heed a summons to appear in court yesterday, government forces and Sokha’s supporters amassed in the capital just streets away from each other.

Hundreds of riot and traffic police – equipped with guns, shields, batons and truck-mounted barriers – were deployed on HE Boulevard, only a few streets away from the CNRP’s headquarters where hundreds of CNRP supporters had congregated in anticipation of an attempt to arrest Sokha.

However, Interior Ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak cited increased traffic on National Road 2 and protection of the CNRP supporters as reasons for the heavy police presence.

Sopheak denied that police were there to arrest Sokha.

“Crowding [around the CNRP office] is why we deployed the police. If anyone throws a grenade then what do we do? We were defending this [CNRP] group,” he said.

Sounds like perfect justification for the police to be there is you ask me....... :whip: :assasin:

Cheeky bastard. That's really out of order.

Foreigner arrested for taking photos of police near CNRP HQ. So be careful all you would-be reporters.
An American photographer was arrested and detained for about four hours on Tuesday after drawing the ire of police deployed near the CNRP’s headquarters in Phnom Penh.

Lou Rabou, deputy chief of the municipal immigration police, confirmed the arrest of James Mizerski, 75, but declined to answer questions about his detention...

Anybody that was in the famous grenade attack on the SRP, the CIA guy that got injured and the ensuing miscarriage of justice for political reasons, all the SR supporters and anyone who would dare confront the powers that be..
Let's just hope the opposition suporters don't start making home-made bombs. Plenty of weedkiller and sugar about.

CNRP requests meeting with King as tensions rise

Thu, 16 June 2016

The Cambodian National Rescue Party yesterday formally requested an audience with the King to discuss the country’s heated political climate, and floated the possibility of multi-party talks involving the international community after its embattled acting president, Kem Sokha, met with a delegation of German officials.

CNRP chief whip Son Chhay said the letter to King Norodom Sihamoni was required given the escalating political tensions in Cambodia, which had caught the attention of the international community.

The tensions revolve around Sokha, who has been holed up at party headquarters since police moved to arrest him a little over two weeks ago for failing to heed court summonses relating to a sex scandal involving him and an alleged mistress.

Four rights workers, an election official and a local CNRP official have also been jailed in relation to the alleged affair. Meanwhile, party president Sam Rainsy is in self-imposed exile to avoid jail time, and two other opposition lawmakers are currently in detention over comments made on Facebook regarding the Vietnamese border.

“It is not only the opposition party talking about the heated political situation,” he said. “The United Nations, European Union, United States and Germany – they worry about our country’s situation.”

Chhay said that, given an opportunity to meet the King, the party would also consider marching and delivering to him a petition with close to 240,000 thumbprints calling for his intervention in the crisis. A previous petition is currently under investigation by the Ministry of Interior after allegations of fake thumbprints emerged.

In late April, the opposition had requested the King assume his constitutional role of arbiter, and curb what they maintained was the politicisation of the judiciary in the conduct of the cases against its members.

NEC’s Ny Chakrya grilled over Sokha case

Thu, 16 June 2016
Lay Samean

Imprisoned National Election Committee official Ny Chakrya yesterday faced questioning at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court over an alleged conspiracy to bribe Cambodia National Rescue Party acting leader Kem Sokha’s purported mistress to deny their relationship.

Court spokesman Ly Sophanna said Chakrya, a former senior official at rights group Adhoc, was grilled by investigating judge Theam Chanpiseth yesterday, but declined to reveal any details about the hearing.

“It is the right of the judge to interrogate the suspect,” Sophanna said.

Chakrya yesterday told Radio Free Asia that he refused to answer questions because his lawyer was absent.

At this rate there won't be any opposition left by the next election.
