Thai government condemned

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Thai government condemned

Post by phuketrichard »

in annual US human trafficking report
US downgrades Thailand to lowest ranking in human trafficking index for 'systematic failure' to prosecute slavers
In January this year the Thai embassy in Washington signed a $400,000-plus deal with leading US law firm Holland & Knight. The money was for lobbying to persuade the White House, Congress and US departments of state and defence that Thailand is a country that fights human trafficking and forced labour.

It seems not to have been money well spent. On Friday Thailand was downgraded to the lowest ranking in the state department's annual report on Trafficking in Persons. The money invested in lobbying therefore represents both a defeat and a serious embarrassment for the Thai authorities.

In truth though, it has looked in recent weeks like the Thais were resigned to this US condemnation. Earlier this month, Thailand was the only government to vote against ratifying a new treaty to stop forced labour drawn up by the UN's International Labour Organisation.

A couple of days later days the law firm emailed a clarification on behalf of the Thai embassy – Thailand had voted against because it was not sure it could implement the treaty, but it would adopt it anyway.

A good video;

OK; put in perspective, this report was compiled before the coup so we can NOT blame the current regime for this, but we can blame the Yugluck government for failure to do anything to make it right . they had a chance to change from 2010 but...

Lets see how Thailand fares in the next report, by legalizing the migrants is for sure a positive move.

For as they say, the proof is in the pudding..

the worst offenders;

Saudi Arabia and Iran are the worst offenders since 2006

You mean by putting them in cages and throwing them out?

Why the pro military propaganda drive in different threads?

this report was PRE COUP!!!! get it
Has absolutely nothing to do with the current Military takeover.
But has to do with Thailand's failure to get anything done in 4 years.

I am NOT pro military ( far far from it) BUT it was the ONLY solution for Thailand

Thailand's response;
THAILAND is "disappointed and disagrees" with the US State Department over its decision to downgrade the country in the latest Trafficking in Persons report to the lowest ranking, insisting tangible progress has been made in trying to solve the problem.

It is totally to do with the military takeover. To say otherwise is bizarre.

You sure sound pro military with all the propaganda and spin you repeat.

It wasn't the only solution for Thailand. You can't have elected governments ousted, then voted back in, then ousted. You have to see democracy through, as it's the best way for any country. You will never have democracy if you cave in every time. And this coup seems stricter. It's definitely not good.

UK

First they were NOT thrown out, they left ( for whatever reason, rumors or ...) and the transport they used to transport them are the ones used by immigration. You want put them on air con bus's?

u dont understand Thailand, The migrant workers were a very very small reason for the coup, if at all.

Thailand is like a family
ur dad, mom and children

the kids could not/would not get along and play together ( proven time an time again) so mom an dad put their foot down.

Strict FUCK YEA, the last one in 2006 did nothing, they leaned

If it was wrong why are so many thais an expats living here in favor of what is going on?

Pray tell ,what solution do u think ( that has not been tried for years and years) should have been done?

They were detained in cages. The rest left in fear. Tens of thousands of people don't just up and leave their livelihood unless they are in fear.

I didn't say migrant workers were a reason for the coup. It was probably just hunger for power.

Solution that hasn't been tried for years , you asked? = Seeing democracy through, and not resorting to coups. The way it is , is like groundhog day. I wonder what Einstein would think about it.....

So how do you see this playing out? Will this General give up power and go back to army duties? And will everyone magically respect the next election result? That's Thai politics sorted is it? lol

Don't worry...it's only the unhelpful media that is being shut down...
Reuters wrote:Thai Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha speaks at a meeting to discuss the 2015 national budget, at the Army Club in Bangkok June 13, 2014.

(Reuters) - Thailand's military authorities are setting up a network of panels to closely monitor domestic and international media and crack down on criticism of what the junta sees as its efforts to right the country, a senior officer said on Thursday.

Rights groups and journalists have criticized curbs imposed on the press since the May 22 bloodless coup the military says was aimed at ending six months of street protests and political paralysis.

Adul Saengsingkaew, deputy head of the National Council of Peace and Order, said the military would monitor reports that were false or posed a threat to national security.

Offenders who refused to cooperate could face charges.

"There will be five committees set up to monitor local and international media that will report to the military daily," Adul, a former national police chief, told Reuters by telephone.

"Police will not pursue legal action against media so long as journalists are cooperative and help share news that is constructive and true. Those that spread inappropriate content may face criminal charges."

He expressed particular concern about reporting on the activities of a government-in-exile that launched a campaign of civil disobedience this week, almost certainly based in a neighboring country.

Officials have made little comment on the group, saying only that there is only one legitimate government.

Junta spokesman Winthai Suvaree said the panels were not intended to restrict Thais' access to information.

Instead, he said, they would help the state make the truth known faster. "We won't close or obstruct the public's right to know truthful news," he added. "We ask for cooperation to write balanced and appropriate news."

The military has shut hundreds of "inappropriate websites", radio stations and television channels since the coup.

Except this one, which you never replied to:

This is actually pretty simple... this benevolent military with only the good of the country at heart could have used the EXACT same methods for calming everyone down FOR the elections as they did once they made elections a thing of the past. They could have done what a military is supposed to do, and protected their governing system instead of usurping it into a totalitarian one.

you mean do what they did in 2006 NOTHING an which is why we are we we are now

Let me say Coups are usually never the ideal solution to a problem but now they ( the Army) has taekn on the task to weed out the bad (from both sides) so when the election does happen it is not polarized between the reds and the yellows as always before. Thailand has moved so far from previous coups the society in Thailand has changed, ( the rice farmers/the villagers-the backbone of Thailand) have now seen how corrupt Thaksin and his family are an how he was merely using them to further is own agenda.

Best thing would be if a third party is formed ( Thais, in polls have already said they would like to see General Prayuth to be the next PM) an well it might as he plans to retire from the army very soon and might take up Politics ( he has NOT ruled it out)

u constantly belittle my opinion here on the ground, but what in your life dictates that you now what is going on? Have u lived in Thailand, do you read thai? Do you have educated thai friends you can converse freely with? Have you studied their history?

Bottom line
It's about who will be in power when the royal succession takes place

although not about the coup , this is a good read>http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news ... 7QV08pZi9M

no, i mean what they did in 2014. but doing it to support the government, not to make their own power play into a dictatorship. and i love how you think that this will magically make people no longer adamant in their support for one side or the other come election time... IF said election time ever comes and they don't just ride the power train into the station.

As for the polls, I hear the Cuban polls always showed a strong support of Castro as well... mostly because people were too afraid to say otherwise, and even if they did the numbers would be altered. And electing the person who perpetrated a coup is a tragic thing, especially if it's military... because then you're still in a military dictatorship and he'll just declare martial law any time the government process doesn't support the laws he wants enacted.

Your justifications for your position are tragic... steadily. I think perhaps you've lived there TOO long and forgotten what it means to look at something objectively. That's why you're using the (common on 440 as well) "you haven't lived here so you CAN'T know" argument... which is a very weak argument. I'll tell you what dictates my opinion... an understanding of how tyrants became tyrants all over the world, and how they use media to manipulate people like you who just believe anything they see on the television.
