Any news on Katherine Grgich's murder on Ko Rong ?

Post by Anchor Moy »

Just spotted this on TA forum. Katherine Grgich was found murdered on Ko Rong almost 3 years ago now and it seems that no one was ever brought to justice for her killing. A friend of hers has posted on a thread about safety on Ko Rong. The case made a lot of noise at the time, but died away with the murder unresolved AFAIK. Her family and friends have not forgotten, but it looks unlikely that the suspect will be arrested. He was believed to have fled to Thailand. They say he murdered her for her camera. So sad.

Koh Rong is NOT SAFE period. Here's why: September 23, 2013 my friend Katherine was on a quest to find destinations for her new Travel Company. She was a seasoned traveller, extremely fit, into martial arts, yoga, etc. She got off the boat and dropped her bags at her hotel (Paradise), and followed the jungle path to the beach. Five days later they found her body. The Cambodian police and our government tried to cover it up and say it was an accident. Even though her throat was slit and clothes partially open! Later they agreed it was a murder and identified the man who since escaped to Thailand. The Cambodian government still has not alerted the Thai police or interpol which had they done this the murderer would have been caught. Our government just keeps saying it is in the hands of the Cambodians who are doing nothing! You are not safe and no, I would not spend our American dollars in a place that has no concern for our safety, no value for a life taken. There have been other murders, robberies and assaults on travels on Koh Rong. Until the Cambodian government makes it a priority to protect visitors and punish anyone who commits a crime, we all should boycott this country. Spend your money in places where they care about their tourists.

Most of the islands in the gulf, whether they be Thai, Khmer, or whatever, have long been little fiefdoms of their own.

I'm sure they must have made millions over recent decades as transit points for many things.

He must be in contact with friends and relatives. All Khmer are, they would die if they weren't. Let's hope he has already, but I suspect quite a few know where he is. Which in my book makes them as bad as him. Stay away from all tourist areas, they attract scum. And they're not all foreign as some people would like you to believe.

And probably lots of tourists invading would make that harder to do I suspect. Maybe they don't encourage murder, etc. but I bet they're happy when tourist numbers fall.

UPDATE: 27 May 2020

Suspected killer, YEOUN YANN, is still at large, but from reports, it seems likely that the chief suspect in the killing of US national Katherine Grgich, on Koh Rong in 2013, has gone to ground in neighboring Thailand.
However, in a meeting with Cambodian Minister of the Interior Sar Kheng yesterday, the US ambassador, Patrick Murphy, requested that Cambodian authorities continue to search for the criminal, and there is still an Interpol Red Notice out for the man's arrest.
