Police Promotions: more colonels and generals.
Police Ranks to Get More Colonels and Generals
Twenty-one police officers were promoted from the rank of colonel to brigadier general late last month, according to a Royal decree signed by King Norodom Sihamoni.
The officers hold positions in units ranging from those in the Interior Ministry police to provincial departments.
Kampong Thom’s deputy provincial police chief Ke Khannara was one of those promoted. He said either Premier HE or Interior Minister Sar Kheng asked for the promotions.
“In general, we work for the attention of our leaders,” Mr. Khannara said. “Even though I have been promoted to the post as general, I am now still responsible for the duties of my existing position as deputy provincial police chief in Kampong Thom.”
The soon-to-be general said he joined the police force shortly after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime in January 1979.
“I have been working as a police officer for more than 30 years and it’s not an easy job when armed robberies or other crimes happen from time to time,” Mr. Khannara said, adding that he was satisfied with his career so far.
Am Sam Ath, a senior technical supervisor for rights group Licadho, said the high number of generals in the police force coupled with the government’s habit of implementing swift promotions would soon start to strain the national budget...
