Re: AEON Mall Phnom Penh Opening 20 June
I'm excited! Plan on going there tomorrow!
God forbid we have too many OPTIONS around town...
And I've NEVER heard of a mall sucking somebody in.
If you left your home country to get away from them, surely you can simply NOT enter AEON Mall if you don't want to. It's not like they strategically put it in between the immigration department and security checkpoint at the airport so you can't avoid walking through it.
The more options the better for everyone living in Cambodia. Another cinema, bowling alley, restaurants, etc.... Great news, I say!

It's beautiful!!! There is still lots of work that needs to be done, but it's definitely a step forward for Cambodia's development. Exciting!!

I was there earlier with the kids, it's like stepping into a parallel universe. It's huge, all the shops are big brands and loads of fast food. If you've been to the big Bangkok malls, that's exactly what this is.
I was busy trying to hate the place then I spotted cotton bed sheet sets with a wide range of none tacky colours for $44 and started to warm to the place.
There's loads of stuff in there that I've never seen for sale in Cambodia before. Especially electronics, I've been after a portable bluetooth speakers/amp system, KFour has two, both out of date and overpriced. That Aeon electronics shop had eight and they were all up to date models.
The supermarket is fucking creepy, there is a member of staff stood at the end of each isle and as you walk past they do an awkward Japanese style bow, if you walk fast it's like a bloody Mexican wave.
Japanese and Khmers, now there's a match made in hell.

It's Jacob and the General's great excitement about this that I didn't really get - all these !!!
(You're both so keen that you almost sound like you're advertising for the mall... so much enthusiasm for a shopping mall is yet another wonder from the kingdom.) But each to his own...
Hope it lives up to your(high) expectations!!!

I am advertising for them, LoL! I hope, and bet, they will succeed!Anchor Moy wrote: ...(You're both so keen that you almost sound like you're advertising for the mall... so much enthusiasm for a shopping mall is yet another wonder from the kingdom.) But each to his own...
Even StarkMonster wanted to hate the place, but it had things he liked in there.
I guess I just don't see a problem with enjoying a classy, upscale mall.
There's all sorts of things you can buy there now that would have cost a trip overseas to get a day ago. That's huge!
Again, walking though a modern mall with aircon, international name brand stores, restaurants, coffee shops, etc, is a nice journey through a wormhole to a parallel universe! The biggest part of it to me is that is people don't like it, they are free to avoid it. I wish there was the option for EVERYTHING here. I'm not a fan of The Gap, but I'd be glad to hear it's here, giving everyone more options. There's a Japanese restaurant on my block. I haven't gone, but I'm glad it's there.
However, if these things TRULY mattered to me in the big scheme of life, I wouldn't be living in Cambodia in the first place.
And this is nothing special to Cambodia. Every time a big mall comes into any city there are people that don't like it for whatever reason. That's cool by me too. You should at least check it out before you say you don't like the place. They might offer something that changes your mind.
And if I go there and it sucks, CEO will be the first to know!
Should we have a CEO meet-up at the bowling alley sometime? Surly that would be fun!

Cotton bed sheets in non-tacky colours? I'll be there.
Fuck it, the wild old days were gone by the turn of the century anyway.

I'm also getting excited and hope it has lots of (genuine) Japanese food. After reading that mexican wage in the supermarket comment I'm even more excited. Unfortunately I'm a little low on cash this month after renewing my visa but I'll probably check it out anyway.
The Chinese have just built the world's biggest mall in Chengdu. It has 14 iMax screens !!

12 of them will never be used, and a rival company is building a new mall right next door that is 2 stories higher and has 20 iMax screens.ali baba wrote:The Chinese have just built the world's biggest mall in Chengdu. It has 14 iMax screens !!
