Re: German and Swedish Nationals Who Are Activists for Licadho Arrested Over Protests at Prey Sar Prison
Phnom Penh: According to local media, two foreign protesters who were involved in protesting about the land dispute in Boung Kok area and appealing to release the Boung Kok activists along with six other civilian officers have been arrested at 11: 30 am on May 9, 2016 by senior Immigration police officers, who are accusing them both of living and working in Cambodia illegally without proper paperwork.
Lieutenant General, Ouk Hai Sila, the head of the immigration department of Interior Ministry told Fresh News on May 9, 2016 that Immigration Department officers had detained the two foreigners, one male and one female who were protesting about the Boung land dispute, for questioning.
"The two foreigners showed neither identity cards as Licadho staff nor could they provide paperwork showing that they were living and working legally in Cambodia with work permits, saying they had left all their documents in their hotel room," said Lieutenant General Ouk Hai Sila.
"It seems like the two foreigners do not have any documentation that they work for Licadho so now they have been taken into custody. Firstly, they are required to be about to show that they have the correct visa and work permit, and secondly, they have to prove that they work for Licadho," he added.
The two foreigners have not yet been identified, according to the Fresh News report. However, they had been to Dong Kor Police Department, accompanied by a lawyer.
Those who were involved with the black shirt protests demanded to release four Human Right Adhoc officers and other secretaries of the National Election Committee arrested by ACU, accused of giving bribes to witness who was said to be sexually involved with Kem Sokha.
Samdach Krola Horm, Sar Keng had threatened to arrest everyone who tries to get involved in this case, in order to keep the peace and keep the nation secure. He even told police to take strong actions to prevent any incited movements since some NGOs have been calling for the Cambodian people to wear black shirts every Monday to protest the incarceration.
The government has considered this to be a color revolution.
Licadho later confirmed that the two foreigners did in fact work for them and they have been released.
