Western do-gooders...

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Western do-gooders...

Post by Anchor Moy »

... need to resist the allure of exotic problems, or why good intentions are not enough...
If you’re young, privileged, and interested in creating a life of meaning, of course you’d be attracted to solving problems that seem urgent and readily solvable. Of course you’d want to apply for prestigious fellowships that mark you as an ambitious altruist among your peers. Of course you’d want to fly on planes to exotic locations with, importantly, exotic problems...

There is a whole industry set up to nurture these desires and delusions — most notably, the 1.5m nonprofit organisations registered in the US, many of them focused on helping people abroad. In other words, the young American ego doesn’t appear in a vacuum. Its hubris is encouraged through job and internship opportunities, conferences galore, and cultural propaganda – encompassed so fully in the patronising, dangerously simple phrase “save the world.”...

Saving the world is a pretty childish mind set... regardless of how "good" those intentions may be. I do believe in lessening ones suffering. That is actually an achievable goal.

I'm saving the world one short-time bar girl at a time. And helping to circulate money through the economy. I wonder if I can start an NGO and scam people in America, Europe, etc. into giving me money to support a life style I'd like to be accustomed too. (like the heads of NGOs here that drive new cars and live in big houses.)

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Block a few roads, shout at a few white people and, oh, pledge undying loyalty to Palestine, and you'll get every college socialist and their unwashed hair turning up on your doorstep to throw trust-fund money at you.
