Growing dates from seed (stones)
Growing dates from seed (stones)
Are there any sources of edible and unprocessed dates here in Cambodia?
Two years ago, visiting friend brought some (expensive) Israeli dates from a big department
store in Bangkok and we were successful in getting three to germinate and
sprout but (sadly) it was necessary to transplant them and none of the three
survived the ordeal.
My current seeds (stones) are from Arabia and Iran and I have over five hundred
sprouters currently in potting compost.

Re: Growing dates from seed (stones)
I wouldn't have thought dates would grow in South East Asia.
I've eaten all sorts of weird dates here in Saudi, even fresh ones off the trees, which I wouldn't have even recognized as dates.

The date palm is grown purely as an ornamental tree is southern Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and even in Hove in Sussex.
Specific conditions are needed to produce fruit good enough for humans to want to eat; the sort of inferior fruit humans
disdain to eat is mashed up and added to animal fodder, for example in the poorer parts of Oman.
