VISA REFUSALS EXPLAINED

European embassies in Bangkok routinely state that most visa applications from Thais are granted, but what are the principal reasons for failure? Pattaya Today has been in contact with 35 unsuccessful Thai applicants to ascertain what went wrong. The most detailed feedback came from “reasons for refusal” on the form issued to those who fail to obtain a British visa, but a number of Schengen applications have also been reviewed. Schengen visas cover 22 members of the European Union – the principal exceptions being Britain and some in Eastern Europe – as well as Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

As regard tourist visas, the most common reason for failure was the applicant’s explanation of why she or he would return to Thailand at the end of the holiday. Although applicants typically mentioned on the form paid employment of some kind, ownership of property in Thailand, family commitments or support from the foreign sponsor, documentary evidence in support of the claims was often not provided.
