SV: Oil Tanker crashes into jetty
Terrible accident. 1 dead and potential environmental damage. Isn't this close to the pristine HE beach ?
http://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/o ... ign=bufferOne man is missing and presumed dead, and there are concerns about an oil slick of unknown size after a Kampuchea Tela oil tanker crashed into a jetty belonging to the company at Sihanoukville.
The 100-metre-wide docking platform and about 80 metres of jetty at the end of the 1,200-metre-long structure were destroyed after being struck by the Vietnamese tanker at about 4pm on Tuesday.
Preah Sihanouk provincial police deputy chief Kol Phaly said “many” port workers were rescued from the water by the crew of the tanker.
However, one security guard, Sem Vannak, 18, who lived in a post on the platform, disappeared when it and other structures fell into the sea...
Workers interviewed by the police said the oil tanker had been attempting to unload oil at the facility, located about 10km north of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, when the ship ran into the platform without slowing down, said Stung Hav district police chief Ros Key.

Re: SV: Oil Tanker crashes into jetty
Google map shows sokimex and Tela depots and jettys a couple km apart and about 5k further north of HS beach. Since it's been a long time I went over there I can't remember which one is which.
Yesterday it was said that the tanker was being emptied onto smaller boats, let's hope it happened.
Also it must have carried refined gasoline or diesel which I believe are much more volatile than crude oil and would disperse in the water without irreversibly polluting the coast.
Ps1: I'm any case the government said local specialists should clean any pollution so there isn't any reason to worry not ?
Ps2: My father in law was on site yesterday, I will ask him when I have chance to see him since he is busy today with Thea Ban KNY visit in Ream base.

Once again, not a specialist so fully open to critics.prahkeitouj wrote:Water pollution
Petrol especially when refined do floats, causing mainly surface problems which do not overly affect marine life aside from sea birds and sea mammals.
You might not remember them but in the 90's in the very same area of the gulf there were huge pollution scandals involving dumping in the sea or on nearby hilly lands (to the same effect), imported industrial wastes such as mercury.
These would have caused much bigger problems, probably still lingering to this date than this incident ever will.

Fun to swim in too.

How many beaches at your place, Asp ? Beautiful and unpolluted swimming areas free of snakes, cowshit and bilharzia ?asp wrote:So, how many points for z

But fair enough, even though this is quite a way from the main SV beaches, it does raise some questions about petrol spillages - past, present and future.
