AEON Mall Phnom Penh Opening 20 June

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

An air-conditioned, multi story building with multiple shops, escalators and elevators meets my definition of a mall (or shopping centre in British English).

It's like saying Cambodia doesn't have roads because it doesn't have motorways with elevated junctions and slip roads. Or the trains are too slow to count as 'real' trains. Or Naga isn't a real casino because it is so shit at everything.

Phnom Penh Paragon sucks stinky water buffalo balls.

Aeon's website says it will open Fri. June 27. Where did the OP hear that it would open on the 20th?
The 20th is by special invite only. I'll report back after my VIP visit :).

Based on what else is available in Cambodia, and assuming AEON will be as nice as it sounds, I tend to agree that it will be the first REAL shopping mall in Cambodia.

Nothing here even resembles anything that's called a mall in most major cities around the world.

Glad to see their doing fire safety training!

It's going to help push Cambodia I believe. I know life isn't all about shopping but this is a serious investment by many! Folks will be watching and I will be watching movies and will be taking my kids to bowl!

If I was in any other country and I told my friend I wanted to check out a shopping mall and they took me to a place like Sorya, Sovanna, Paragon, etc, I would say, "I didn't mean an indoor market with aircon, I meant a "real mall."

Jakarta, Bangkok, Saigon, Kuala Lumpur all have what i would call "malls." Cambodia does not. IMHO

I'm won't be going to Aeon.
I came to Cambodia to get away from consumerism.

Yea --- I am surprised so many are so enthusiastic about it. I doubt it will do anything at all for 98% of Cambodian people --- maybe a few cashier jobs though. Any idea how any local jobs will be created by this?

This is huge development for Cambodia. There is plenty to be excited about! As much as I hate construction noise, I love seeing it.

No. Probably not.
We'll be happier playing tennis and swimming at the sofitel next door.
