Judge Denies Medical Care for Jailed CNRP Activist
The Court of Appeals yesterday upheld a lower court verdict that forbid Cambodian-American opposition member Meach Sovannara from flying abroad and separated two other complaints from the decision so they could be dealt with at a later date.
The two complaints concerned an attempt to annul a Municipal Court decision due to a procedural issue and an appeal of the guilty verdicts handed down to the 11 opposition activists.
Mr. Sovannara, the former head of the CNRP’s Information and Media Department, and the other 10 activists were charged for leading and participating in demonstrations that led to clashes between opposition supporters and Daun Penh district security guards at Freedom Park on July 15, 2014. They were sentenced to jail for 7 to 20 years.
After an hour of debate on the three complaints, Presiding Judge Plang Samnang decided to break down the case and focus solely on the appeal to annul the verdict that forbids Mr. Sovannara from going abroad. The complaint to annul a Municipal Court decision stems from a procedural issue in which the 11 men say they were tried without the presence of their lawyer. That complaint, and their general appeal of their guilty verdict, will be handled by the court at a later date.
