Local beer not only tastes terrible - it is ineffective and gives the drinker headaches. Why you people drink that stuff is well beyond my understanding - just carry a flask of good bourbon...

Mate, try just 3 Sierra Nevada Torpedos...@ 7.2 %...fun, wonderfully rich and hoppy...and highly efficient...same price as 9 toilet water local cans @ .50 cents each .

Anyone tried anything from Matso's Brewery in Broome? They're stocked nationally in Oz now, boutique ales and lagers so expensive, but mighty mighty fine.

The salient question is have you ever had "real beer"? I've been to Oz and the standard beer fare there is poor (like virtually all countries) when compared to the designer micros. Why? Because of better ingredients, no chemicals and much greater care. Hence the higher price points.

It aint rocket science and it aint about fervent nationalism either...good beer is good beer. And good beer can't possibly cost .50 a can anywhere.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy many pints of the liquid amber flowing from the good motherland.
In Oz, the trend nowadays are the brews from designer micros that are popping up around, and available in any bottleshop, and good pub on tap. Ever had Little Creatures, Nine Tales, Matilda Bay, True South, Mountain Goat, 2 Brothers........ list can go on and on.
Sure - there are rubbish beers which usually come off the tap in some dingy stale pub located next to a factory, but I can say the same as UK.

I think that you misunderstood my post - the point that "standard" beer everywhere is poor - including OZ and the UK, et al...and local micros trump all others - everywhere. I agree with you...and good beer must always be expensive because it's impossible to brew "cheap" good beer...

All that talk of alcohol and milk made me thirsty for a white russian and since you asked soi dog; the last time I drank was on my birthday 2 months ago. I got totally shitfaced with my friends.

Soi Dog --- it seems you are a "Yank" --- me too --- although almost 20 years removed from residency. I think a lot of what you are talking about is just a big difference in culture between USA and Anglo (Uk/Oz/Kiwi) culture. In the USA we party like crazy when we are young but move on to other things as we get older. While there are a lot of bars in the USA they are not such a central part of our socializing. Most guys after they finish their school days go out to chase girls etc. Hard core local pubs are mostly for older guys from a shrinking population. Anglo culture is different from Yank culture. The "Pub" is a big center of socializing and getting to know someone better.

It is sort of institutionalized in the culture.In the USA I don't remember too much business being done over heavy drinking sessions. Maybe a Golf Course --- but usually it was more of a get to the bottom line approach. When I moved to Asia and found myself sometimes doing business with guys from Oz and UK ---- it always required meeting up for a few beers first in order to size each other up.

I think the drinking references you are seeing here is just an extension of Anglo Pub Culture. I would not be to judgmental about it.
