The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) for Asia-Pacific said 37,000 Cambodian migrants left Thailand on Friday and another 6,000 tried to leave Saturday morning, bringing the total to 60,000 over the past seven days.

On Wednesday, Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the massive deportation was due to the Thai military coup, which forced factories and enterprises to stop using illegal migrant workers, according to Xinhua.

He also dismissed news reporting that Thai military had shot Cambodian workers.

Soon expect to see Burmese heading home but its not just being forced or troubles with WP/s, with Burma opening up more and more Many Burmese are returning home to work and build back their country. So along with the exodus of Cambodian , Thailand might soon find itself in a serious workers shortage.

Interesting. There press release doesn't mention that.

Press Releases : Clarifications on Recent return of Cambodian workers from Thailand And Thailand’s Policy on Management of Foreign Workers

...Local authorities have also indicated that, based on interviews collected from Cambodian workers, the main reasons behind such recent high number of outflow include (1) workers returning to work in the rice farm as it is the beginning of the planting season; (2) workers returning home as their 4 year-employment contracts had been completed; (3) workers fleeing because of fear due to rumours of mass arrests and deportations by Thai authorities, and (4) calls by their families in Cambodia for them to return home due to concerns because of the rumours...

Those IOM numbers, are they estimating total migrants returning to Cambodia, or only counting those who left through official border crossings?

Hey LTD;
rather than quote me, why not quote the source ( sorry i forgot to put my quotes in quotes) as i no more said it than anything u write (since all u do is quote other sources)

How do u stand?

do u agree with me that no Cambodians were killed
or
that they were?

On one hand Thailand gets critized for closing a blind eye to slave labour and trafficking,( as in the fishing /construction industries) then they start to implement the first steps of correcting those problems by doing what every responsible country does and request that every migrant worker be registered and look at the ridiculous comments they cop.
Got to remember Thailand is currently under military Rule and they can do whatever they want. Truth be told, the Cambodians have got in a panic because of unfounded rumor, spread no doubt by someone with an agenda of disruption. Just because some rights organization picks up on the rumor, as in "heres something sensational we can get some publicity from " doesn't make it true.

All i am saying is so far the the currently ruler are doing what needs to be done to get Thailand back on track, there not perfect but....

Its going to get worse as there is supposedly a rumor circulating in Cambodia that all Cambodia need be out of Thailand by June 23rd
or risk......

DO NOT QUOTE ME AS ITS JUST A RUMOR!!!!!

now see this;
PHNOM PENH, June 15, 2014 (AFP) - More than 110,000 Cambodians have fled Thailand to return home in the past week, an official said Sunday, amid fears of a crackdown on migrant workers after last month's military takeover.

"They said they are scared of being arrested or shot if they run when Thai authorities check their houses," Saroeut added. "Most of them went to work in Thailand without a work permit."
Soum Chankea, a coordinator for Cambodian rights group ADHOC who has met many workers at the border, said the number of migrants returning home was growing each day.

Don't know. Not enough reliable information. Just unconfirmed rumor and military propaganda. As I said in my very first comment "I don't know if any of it is true..." My guess would be more likely not than so, but as I said, "given the Thai penchant for gunning down Cambodians (usually illegal loggers) illegally crossing into Thailand" it's not outside the realm of possibility.

No, IOM. As I posted, IOM tweeted this just a few hours ago. NYT reporting the same:

They aren't just just stopping in Poipet. Haven't you been following the news about how they are being transported onward?

Now up to ; 120,000 Cambodians flee from Thailand
Unregistered workers feared crackdown by military, officials say
MORE THAN 120,000 Cambodians have fled Thailand to return home in the past week, fearing a crackdown on migrant workers after last month's military takeover, an official said yesterday.

The mass exodus of labourers - who play a key role in Thai industries such as seafood and agriculture but often lack official work permits - comes amid a junta warning of arrest and deportation for illegal foreign workers.

"They're returning en masse like a dam collapsing. They've never come en masse like this before in our history," Kor Sam Saroeut, governor of the northwestern province of Banteay Meanchey where the main border crossing is, told AFP.
http://www.nationmultimedia.com/nationa ... 36334.html

This is going to be a serious trouble for Cambodia on so many fronts. ( maybe more so than for Thailand which only loses the unskilled workers.)

1. how will they transport so many back home? (Cambodian authorities have arranged nearly 300 cars and military trucks to ferry workers home from the Aranyaprathet-Poipet border checkpoint but many would have to stay near the site overnight until transport became available, Saroeut said) that wont do enough
2. how many of those returning have a home anymore
3 who will pick up the tab
4. where will they get money to live
5. the monies sent home before wont be coming for awhile. How will this affect Cambodia?

this is as much a mass exodus as when Pol Pot took over the country, although that time they were heading TO THAILAND

an interesting summary follow up,;;

http://asiancorrespondent.com/123792/ov ... iland-why/
Although, Rainsy claims that 500,000 Cambodians were deported by the Thai authorities (whereas Hun Sen’s government claims lower figures than those of IOM). Moral of the story is that BP would rely on IOM over either Rainy or the HE government…
He is a regular rumor spreader.
Conclusion: It is hard to say what specifically set things off, but BP believes it is a combination of (1) Cambodians being aware that some were being blamed for being red shirt protesters and understanding the military government is aligned with the establishment, (2) military has been cracking down on all types of activity since the coup, (3) many of the Cambodians leaving/fleeing do not have the correct documentation, but in the past the crackdowns were infrequent and payments could be made (but with the military in control, there seem to be doubts from workers whether this is possible now), (4) military has made statements cracking down on illegal labor, (5) talk of crackdowns has made some Thai employers nervous and this no doubt filters through to employees, and (6) stories of Thai soldiers killing Cambodian workers (together with the knowledge that previous stories about the Thai military in regards to Cambodian workers/loggers has not been positive).

still not confirmered but;
Meanwhile, dozens of repatriated Cambodians told the Post about having to hide during recent police raids and reported being solicited for as much as $66 by military officials in exchange for safe passage to the border. Thai media also reported several checkpoints set up along highways where military personnel are apprehending scores of migrant workers.

Recently repatriated construction worker Kim San, 35, said that when soldiers ostensibly came to assist the 300 workers at his site in returning to Cambodia, the officers instead jailed the group, demanding each pay 300 baht ($10) to get out of detention.

The workers had to pay an additional 1,700 baht for the soldiers to bus them to the border.

“We were told if we didn’t have the money, they would shoot us or keep us in detention,” he said.

Yesterday, the national police commissioner’s website featured pictures of Cambodian workers in Thailand clearing grass. The post said the workers were caught trying to return to Cambodia, and because they could not pay soldiers 300 baht each, they were forced to clear the area around the border checkpoint adjoining Battambang province before they were permitted to leave.

and Cambodians treat their own not so nice as well; (of course not 100% )
But repatriated workers are finding their troubles don’t end after crossing the border; several have discovered themselves subject to abuse and exploitation by fellow Cambodians. Police in Poipet yesterday arrested two local men after they charged migrants for nonexistent bus tickets on government-subsidised transportation.

“Workers reported that the suspects took 4,000 riel per person [$1] for a ticket to go back home in the provinces,” said Om Sophal, Poipet police chief.

Most likely, these people have been warned by those "in the know" to flee from a failed state that is on the brink of imploding with chaos and conflict before it's too late. =@

Migrants of other nationalities would be wise to follow suit. :arrow:
