Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

The virginity culture and business in Cambodia

Post by Anchor Moy »

I thought that the virginity at marriage was becoming a thing of the past, but it seems that the culture of virginity continues , as Cambodian women are having unnecessary operations to "restore" their hymen in a procedure called hymenoplasty. This procedure is not regulated, which means that anyone can perform the operation. Typically, the authorities are more concerned with Cambodia's (virginal) image than providing safeguards for women's health.
Exert from a long article from the PPP:
...Private practice Hymen reconstruction operates in a legal grey area.According to Dr Sok Srun, director of the Health Ministry’s Department of Hospital Services, there is no legal regulation on the procedure, meaning that private clinics can’t be licensed to perform it but can’t technically be prohibited either.

Public clinics did not carry out the procedure, he said, and the private clinics that did generally didn’t advertise, helping to maintain this uneasy status quo.

But one clinic, Victoria International Hospital in Tuol Kork, has not shied away from public discussion of its practice, causing controversy in the process.

A year ago the hospital ran television and radio advertisements for “virgin surgery”. They prompted a letter signed by Minister of Information Khieu Kannarith requesting a halt to the advertisements – although not the procedure itself – in order to preserve “the moral and traditional beauty of Cambodian society”...
There are also imported blood suppositories that you can place in the vagina on your wedding night :
Because the science of virginity and hymen restoration is imprecise, methods aside from surgical procedures have proliferated.
Imported suppository pills available on the market allow women to achieve temporary “virginity” by releasing a rush of fake blood, or by producing a tightening response that lasts for up to an hour.

Whatever happened to biting your finger till it bleeds on your 'wedding' night?

A well worn Thailand hooker meets a first time in Asia bloke and they get on well. She sees he's got a few bob and she's not getting any younger so plays it cool and convinces the man she's still a virgin. She tells him we get married first then we have sex.
So she asks advice from the old women around the village ''when we have sex, how will he believe I'm still a virgin?'' One old ex hooker tells her '' stretch a strong rubber band across your flaps, then it will be a bit tight when he pushes it in''

So on the wedding night, all the expensive festivities over they go to bed for the first time. He's been waiting a long time for this so they quickly get undressed and get to it. He's pumping away but finding it hard work, then suddenly you hear this ''WHAPP'' and the bloke screams. She's says ''not to worry love it's just my virginity going''. He says '' well you better go and find it and get it back, it's took one of my bollocks with it''.
