Borrowed words

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Lundi (Monday)
Mardi (Tuesday)
Jeudi (Thursday)
Samedi (Saturday)
Dimanche (Sunday)

Amusingly, no one's called Mercredi (Wednesday) or Vendredi (Friday).
I think the origins of at least a few of those names are older than French... just sayin'.

Well, the thing some of the days' names have in common is that they represent astral bodies.
Tgai chan = Monday = Lundi = Moon (Lune in French)
Tgai atith = Sunday = Sun

In French, Mardi stands for Day of Mars, Mercredi is Day of Mercure, Jeudi is Day of Jupiter, Vendredi is Venus' Day, and Samedi is Day of Sabbath. Dimanche comes from latin Dominicus (lord) and has Christian origins as Day of the Lord.

Curious to know where the Khmer names come from.

Ummm, pretty sure they're not. Just sayin'. They know it means "Monday" in French. They like naming them after months or days because of when the kid was born. I'm assuming they don't use mercredi or vendredi because they're 3 syllable words with weird "r" sounds.

Ummm, pretty sure they are. The origin of Lundi is Lune, from the Latin "luna", etc.

I thought you were referring about the khmer origins of those names (predating the French)... Now I'm confused.

Okay, StroppyChops, but we are talking about usage of French words in Khmer as given names.

Sorry - stirring the pot, too much free time and an Internet connection. Carry on...
