Focus on Porn Obscures Complex Causes of Rape

STUNG SEN CITY, Kompong Thom province – Saroeun found her granddaughter in the shed behind their stilt house just before midday on Friday last week. The 8-year-old was frantically trying to clean her legs, which were covered in blood.

Terrified, the 60-year-old woman wrapped the unspeaking child in a sarong, put her on the back of a bicycle and pedaled about 2 km to the local clinic, where a doctor euphemistically concluded that the girl had “been injured, but not with a weapon” and advised the family to go to the police.


Srayov commune police chief Kang Sorn attempted to question the girl—who remained silent and continued bleeding—for nearly half an hour before she fainted and was taken to the provincial referral hospital. When she regained consciousness, she told her mother that she had been raped by her 14-year-old neighbor. The boy was arrested and confessed to the crime.

What induced a young teenager to commit a rape so violent that the victim was hospitalized for six days? For authorities, the answer was simple: pornography watched on a friend’s smartphone.

“Pornography makes them have these feelings,” said Chea Poeun, head of the provincial police’s serious crimes bureau. “And then, they want to try.”

Mr. Sorn, the commune police chief, concurred.

“I think pornography and pornographic photographs are the reason people commit crimes against children,” he said. “It’s only smartphones that make them dare to rape someone.”

However, Mr. Sorn admitted the boy only told police that pornography led him to commit the rape after they specifically asked him if it was a motivating factor.

Third suspect held for Kampot murder

Police have apprehended a third suspect in the case of the suspected rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in Kampot province, and have also found what they believe to be a second murder weapon.

Last Monday evening, victim Khun Nay disappeared in the Lboeuk commune of Chhouk district. On Wednesday at 6am, her mutilated corpse was found by her elder sister in a rice field a few hundred metres from her house, with grotesque injuries to her neck and face.

The first suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was brought in by police that day for questioning. Two days later police in Phnom Penh apprehended a second teenage suspect. According to Kampot deputy police chief Sau Kimoeun, both boys have been released.

Suspect charged in Kampot rape-murder case

The Kampot Provincial Court yesterday handed down charges to the lead suspect in the gruesome murder and suspected rape of a 14-year-old girl in Kampot province.

San No, 24, was charged by the court with premeditated murder and denied bail, and could face 30 years to life in prison, according to Kampot deputy provincial penal police chief Kong Sakhon.

Last Monday evening, victim Khun Nay disappeared in the Lboeuk commune of Chhouk district. On Wednesday at 6am, her mutilated corpse was found by her sister in a field a few hundred metres from her house.

According to investigator James McCabe, director of the Phnom Penh-based Child Protection Unit, the victim’s face “had been removed to the bone”, cut away with the serrated edge of a palm frond. The face was not found.

The victim was also stabbed through the neck with a 10-centimetre long piece of fencepost that investigators later found fit into a missing part of the suspect’s own fence. The victim’s eyes were also gored.

Elderly Monk Arrested for Repeated Rape of Girls

An elderly, recently ordained monk confessed on Thursday to raping two 9-year-old girls multiple times in Battambang province, after being defrocked and arrested on Wednesday morning, police said.

Euv Thon, 68—who had been a monk for just one month—took up residence at a pagoda in Sampov Loun district two weeks ago, allegedly using his position to sexually abuse two girls who attended a local school, said deputy district police chief Ly Rum.


“The monk persuaded the schoolgirls to come to his room by offering them some cake and money,” he said, adding that Mr. Thon raped both girls multiple times on January 6, 8 and 9, offering them a few more thousand riel before each incident.

Ten-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Raped in Forest by Man

A 54-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping a 10-year-old neighbor in the forest while her parents were away from their home in Kompong Cham province, police said on Monday.

Koy Channy, a recently divorced carpenter, took the girl from her home in Srei Santhor district’s Prek Pur commune at around 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, said Heng Vanna, the district police chief.

“The suspect and victim’s family know each other quite well. The suspect has always given money to the victim and taken her around on his bicycle,” Mr. Vanna said.

The girl’s mother reported the rape to police after her daughter told her about it two days later, he said, adding that Mr. Channy was arrested the next day and questioned by district police.

Police Arrest Man for Coordinating Gang Rape of Girl

A 41-year-old man has been arrested for involvement in the gang rape of a teenage girl in Tbong Khmum province on Monday, police said on Tuesday.

The province’s deputy police chief, Prak Bunnon, said suspect Sem Lay had convinced the 16-year-old victim, whom he regularly spoke to on the telephone, to meet him at a local pagoda, promising her that if she met him in person he would buy her a new phone.

However, Mr. Lay showed up with a friend and suggested that the three take a motorbike ride to a local forest, where they both raped the girl, the deputy police chief said.

“The victim told police that she was gang-raped at around 3:40 p.m. on May 23, 2016, in the forest near a cashew farm located in Dambe district,” he said, adding that the girl then went to a local police station in neighboring Ponhea Krek district, where she lives, to report the attack.

Two Minors Raped in Separate Cases

A rubber plantation worker was arrested in Tbong Khmum province on Wednesday for raping his 11-year-old neighbor at her home earlier in the day, according to district police.

Korb Buntha, 23, attacked the girl after her parents left for work at a different rubber plantation before dawn and he saw her sleeping on the porch of her house in Tbong Khmum district’s Rokapoa Pram commune, district police chief Long Sarin said on Thursday.

“The suspect saw the girl asleep on the porch in front of the house. He came in, turned off the light and carried her into the house and raped her,” he said.

In the morning, Mr. Sarin said, the girl went to school as normal and only told her parents about the attack in the afternoon—when they noticed that her clothing was spotted with blood.

“This was a cruel act and very much against the law,” he said, adding that the suspect would be sent to court today.

Kratie Farmer Arrested for the Rape of Teenage Stepdaughter

A rice farmer in Kratie province has confessed to sexually assaulting his 13-year-old stepdaughter while on a three-day trip to the forest last week and was jailed on aggravated rape charges on Wednesday, officials said.

Meas Horn, 40, who lives with his wife and children in Kratie’s Sambor district, traveled with his stepdaughter to a patch of forest some 25 km from their home on May 25 to gather wood for construction and raped the girl on Friday night before returning home the next morning, according to district police chief Bun Chhoeun.


“The stepfather went to cut wood inside the forest and brought his stepdaughter along to cook rice for him,” Mr. Chhoeun said.

On Friday night, “the stepfather threatened to kill her with an ax, dragged her down by her hand and raped her,” he said.
