UPDATE: Kiwi has been released as part of a presidential amnesty. He ended up serving 10 months and will now be deported I guess. Would be interesting to know if the two Burmese who went to jail for the same offense have also been pardoned.
Burma frees New Zealander jailed for insulting Buddhism
NEW ZEALANDER Phil Blackwood was among the 101 prisoners released from Yangon’s notorious Insien Prison in Burma (Myanmar) Friday in the latest presidential amnesty.
A spokesman from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed the news to Frontier, adding: “This is understandably of significant relief to his family.”...

says right in the article;

.
....According to the Myanmar Times, Blackwood’s co-defendants were also released.
He doesn't seem the worse for 10 months in a Burmese jail

Right :
Dual UK-NZ citizen Phil Blackwood of the high-profile “Buddha Bar” case has been confirmed by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade as being among those released from Insein Prison. Ko Tun Thurein and Ko Htut Ko Ko Lwin, his two Myanmar colleagues and co-accused, were also freed said representatives of the Former Political Prisoners Society...
However...

Of the over 50 student protesters detained, it is believed that just one has been released from Mandalay’s Oboe prison...
U Bo Kyi said while today’s release is a step in the right direction, there are still 409 political cases in the pipeline with 114 behind bars awaiting trial...

you asked;

and you quoted they were;

what does the next paragraph have to do with that
Of the over 50 student protesters detained, it is believed that just one has been released from Mandalay’s Oboe prison...
so ONLY one of the 50 students detained were released.

@PR

Just trying to give a bit of perspective; that one presidential pardon doesn't mean that there are no more political prisoners in Burma/Myanmar. Something the article makes very clear.

(I know you know, and I know, but some people don't realise that Burmese students and activists are still in jail for political crimes, and continue to be imprisoned. While this amnesty is good news,"one swallow does not make a summer", or something along those lines.)

The kiwi was not a political prisoner.

its a point of fact people are locked up all over the world for things they should not be locked up for

How many are in Guantanamo bay , never been charged with a crime , never had their day in court, no lawyer
How many were "disappeared" in South America and Central America in the 70-80's?
how many did the CIA, Mossad, "disappear"

Its a fucked world
but, at least for now, its the only one we got.

Ok, one free Kiwi does not make a Burmese summer. That's all I wanted to say.
