Re: Kiwi faces 4 years jail for Buddha ad images in Burma
UPDATE: Kiwi has been released as part of a presidential amnesty. He ended up serving 10 months and will now be deported I guess. Would be interesting to know if the two Burmese who went to jail for the same offense have also been pardoned.

.
He doesn't seem the worse for 10 months in a Burmese jail....According to the Myanmar Times, Blackwood’s co-defendants were also released.

Right :phuketrichard wrote:says right in the article;

However...Dual UK-NZ citizen Phil Blackwood of the high-profile “Buddha Bar” case has been confirmed by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade as being among those released from Insein Prison. Ko Tun Thurein and Ko Htut Ko Ko Lwin, his two Myanmar colleagues and co-accused, were also freed said representatives of the Former Political Prisoners Society...

U Bo Kyi said while today’s release is a step in the right direction, there are still 409 political cases in the pipeline with 114 behind bars awaiting trial...

@PR
(I know you know, and I know, but some people don't realise that Burmese students and activists are still in jail for political crimes, and continue to be imprisoned. While this amnesty is good news,"one swallow does not make a summer", or something along those lines.)
Just trying to give a bit of perspective; that one presidential pardon doesn't mean that there are no more political prisoners in Burma/Myanmar. Something the article makes very clear.what does the next paragraph have to do with that

The kiwi was not a political prisoner.
its a point of fact people are locked up all over the world for things they should not be locked up for
How many are in Guantanamo bay , never been charged with a crime , never had their day in court, no lawyer
How many were "disappeared" in South America and Central America in the 70-80's?
how many did the CIA, Mossad, "disappear"
Its a fucked world
but, at least for now, its the only one we got.
