Do you have a Cambodian trip report you want to share? Post it here, and feel free to link to your blog if it's a travel blog for Cambodia, South East Asia, or anywhere really. You can ask and answer questions about travel advice in Cambodia or just share your pictures and videos with us. Most people who live in or visit Cambodia have also checked out nearby countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, and you can get to most of these countries by traveling overland, so put any travel plans, reviews or questions here. Discussions about dirt bike trails in here as well.

Tourist Areas You Should Avoid in Southeast Asia

Post by General Mackevili »

PATTAYA, THAILAND; VANG VIENG, LAOS; MANILA, PHILIPPINES and KUTA, BALI, INDONESIA make the list:

SOUTHEAST ASIA is the favourite playground of Australians, with huge numbers of us travelling to Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos and the Philippines each year.

But if you’re a tourist who wants to avoid large groups of fellow tourists, you might want to know which destinations to steer clear of. One Quora user recently posed this question on the website: “I am doing the usual route of Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and want to avoid places crowded with tourists where it is no doubt beautiful but everyone is just boozing. What tourist areas should be avoided in Southeast Asia?”

Dozens of people wrote back, advising against travelling to parts of Thailand, Laos, Indonesia and the Philippines.

What a useless article..... The criteria used would put pretty much every town in SE Asia on the list.

Been to all of them and mostly agree but take Vang Vieng off this list. All the bars along river but two have been shut down and rope swings of death removed so no more dead tourists. I rented a mountain bike and crossed the bridge and found some of the most beautiful country side in SE Asia. Plus cheap food and lodging, even found a brothel out on the highway north of town. Love it there.

Amsterdam is the only place on earth that I feel completely unsafe at any time of day. I was mugged outside a McD's at 9 a.m., on a bridge on a canal in the afternoon, and was steamed by a group in the late evening. Fortunately in the first instance a copper came along and broke it up before I lost my shirt, in the second an Indian gentleman drove the miscreant off with a stick and in the third a taxi happened by and I managed to pull my mates into it before things got really bad.... comparatively S E Asia is a doddle.

Haha, yeah. I would have our total shitholes on that list, like Johar Baru, Malaysia.

It was a list of places that the author and friends just don't like.

When did that happen? The 1970s or 80s? Doesn't seem like the Amsterdam I know. Worst thing that ever happened to myself in 20+ visits and all kinds of states was an altercation with a crackhead panhandler who tried to hustle me.
