Phnom Penh Post: 3 RCAF members charged with last weeks attack on CNRP lawmakers:
Three men, all members of the military, were yesterday charged over the savage assault of two opposition lawmakers outside parliament last week during a pro-CPP protest, as the spotlight intensified on the role of the armed forces in the attack.

Royal Cambodian Armed Forces members Sot Vanny, 45, Chhay Sarith, 33, and Mao Hoeung, 34, each face one charge of intentional violence with aggravating circumstances and two counts of property damage stemming from the October 26 gang-bashing of opposition lawmakers Kong Sakphea and Nhay Chamroeun, a Phnom Penh Municipal Court official said yesterday...

As usual, there are a lot of contradictions: suspects confessed, they deny; they are members of the PM's Bodyguard Unit, Bodyguard Unit issues denial; the person who is believed to have ordered the attack, orders the arrest, and so on.

Smoke and mirrors. Did you see what happened ? What ? Nothing happened. Carry on.

More on the arrests and various reactions. My picks for quote of the day from the Cambodia Daily article: https://www.cambodiadaily.com/news/sold ... ers-99379/
“The court charged them and has already sent them to prison,” Major General Khemarin said. “They’re all soldiers but I am not sure where they come from.”

Close runner-up:
However, Defense Minister Tea Banh said it was not his business that the soldiers assaulted elected lawmakers as they attempted to leave the parliament.

Quite obviously the army is not there to defend elected lawmakers.

One thing that the CNRP need to do is sack their security chief, after the total failure of the victim's drivers to safeguard their passengers. The behavior of the one who took a lap of honour around his car, was surreal. :hattip:
The most boring man in the World. Ever!

Protest leader assistant to PM

The head of the youth group seen leading a protest outside the National Assembly in October – attendees of which brutally assaulted two opposition lawmakers – is an assistant to Prime Minister HE, according to a decree released online.

Pankhem Bunthan, executive director of the Youth Federation of Senaneak, whose members in June swore an oath of fealty to the premier, was appointed to the role in May, according to a directive signed by the premier and obtained yesterday.

Bunthan is shown in pictures, circulated on social media, holding a megaphone in front of a crowd of protesters, who gathered outside parliament on October 26 demanding that Cambodia National Rescue Party vice president Kem Sokha be removed as the parliament’s first vice president, an ousting that occurred soon after.

After most of the 2,000-strong crowd dispersed, a group of protesters – including one man pictured standing near Bunthan – viciously attacked opposition lawmakers Nhay Chamroeun and Kong Saphea.

Assaulted lawmaker looks to US

Nhay Chamroeun, one of the two Cambodian National Rescue Party lawmakers savagely beaten in front of the National Assembly in late October, may be seeking legal recourse through the US justice system.

In an interview with Radio Free Asia aired yesterday, Chamroeun, a dual Cambodian-US citizen, said he will be meeting with a lawyer with the intention of filing a lawsuit in a US court.

“The Khmer community in the US has already prepared a lawyer. So I will meet with the lawyer to seek the possibility to urge this suit,” he said.

In the same broadcast, Chamroeun reiterated the claim that the attacks were orchestrated.

“I suspected that the one . . . behind [the attack] is a powerful man,” he said, adding that “simple people” are not capable of such violence.
