Gov to Install Security Cameras in 20 Phnom Penh Locations

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Phnom Penh, Cambodia: Authorities have begun installing security cameras in 20 locations throughout Phnom Penh in order to insure traffic regulations are more strictly followed.

They are trying to do the installations discreetly by making it look like they are just participating in an Easter Egg Hunt with a cute basket.

Image

They have hired 2 police officers to monitor the video feeds, and if one of them happens to see someone driving during the day with their lights "on" or other serious offences, they have been instructed to run out to the location and arrest them on the spot, keeping 70% of whatever tea money they can get.

This story is not only incomplete but also old. The photos were first published by CD 16th July. That is not the Cambodian government installing anything, it's China. Let's get our facts right. Koh Santeap has plagiarized not only the story but also the photos. Must have been a slow news day. Also, you need to read more news if you think this is new. For a news service you apparently check very few facts.

Chinese police began installing surveillance cameras on the streets of Phnom Penh on Tuesday, following a donation from Beijing to assist authorities in monitoring crime and traffic in the capital, an official said Wednesday.

Plainclothes officers from China’s Ministry of Public Security continued to install closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) at three locations around the city Wednesday, and will have put 200 cameras in place by the beginning of next month, said Min Sovanna, director of the radio communication department at the Cambodian National Police.

“China has donated 200 security cameras and LCD screens,” Mr. Sovanna said. “These security cameras will be installed on traffic lights at 20…road intersections.”

Mr. Sovanna added that a total of 32 square meters of television screens were being set up at a command center at the National Police headquarters. Officers from his department, he said, would monitor the screens around the clock.

CCTV network goes live in capital: police

Some 200 surveillance cameras installed at Phnom Penh’s traffic lights were switched on for the first time yesterday, the National Police and Ministry of Interior announced.

“These cameras will send data immediately to us, and we will be able to command our forces [to respond to] traffic crimes and other crimes that happen unexpectedly,” said Min Vanna, department director of the National Police’s radio centre.

The cameras are part of a $3 million equipment package offered from China’s Public Security Ministry. Hu Bin Chen, deputy director of international cooperation at the Chinese ministry, yesterday said China plans to donate additional HD cameras, along with fire engines and water cannons in 2016.
