Might Not Need a Tourist Visa for Vietnam (US/EU citizens)

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

The only reason I haven't visited Vietnam is because of the visa hassle ( and cost). I would for sure love to spend some long weekends over there versus the same shit here in Cambodia.

Also, why would countries like Sweden, Finland, and Denmark get a visa exempt status? What is the history behind that?
I'll give ya 500 Riel for it...

A Danish friend cannot explain it.

But after a little research, I might suggest one reason. The Viet visa-free pacts with Nordic countries came into force in 2005. At that time Thailand was swarming with tourists from all over, but particularly the nationals of the Nordic countries escaping the long winters. I'm guessing VN wanted a little of that winter tourist action. Simple as that. Oh, and the Russians got a free pass in 2009. Overall, Vietnam's tourist arrivals have seen double digit increases year over year so far this year.
