Books in Khmer Online?

Post by Otis » Tue Dec 08, 2015 1:09 am

I know this girl who is learning English and is functionally literate in Khmer. BUT she has never read a book. Are there books in Khmer online somewhere?

Here is a perfect answer to your Q: YES

Here is a link which has 50 Khmer language/script books in PDF format that you can download for free.

http://www.dlir.org/klb-home/

Here is the description of them:

Khmer Language Books

This collection of books in the Khmer language represents a selection of books from the National Library of Cambodia. They were originally published from 1950 to 1973, between the final years of the colonial French Protectorate (1863-1953) and the takeover of the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979). The 50 digital books were produced under the direction of Dr. Pascal Bourdeaux by a project organized by the Center for Khmer Studies (Siem Reap, Cambodia) in 2006-2007. This project was supported by a grant from the US Department of Education's Technological Innovation and Cooperation for Foreign Information Access (TICFIA) program to DLIR partners. To learn more about this and other TICFIA projects sponsored by DLIR partners, consult the Local Archives and Libraries web site.

That said, there may be many other places to find them online too. If you happen to stumble across more sources, post them.

Took a look at the above site w. my girl. It seems to be concerned with preserving historical Khmer stuff from the past 80 years or so that may have been lost or forgotten during the kr and otherwise. That stuff is not interesting to the average Khmer, especially those who have not been to much school.

I did find this site

http://www.khmer-books.com/

and

http://www.khmer-books.com/index.php?gcm=1103ories

The stories and books here are much more interesting to her. The site is a bit of a puzzle. Can anyone look at it and see how stuff from it can be downloaded?

This one appears to have just scanned the pages and posted them, so you can read them on the site but no real way to "download" the whole book.

Let me scope out the second one...

But note, they are the result of an academic historical preservation effort. They are of little interest to your average Khmer Joe/Jane [Ta/Moum]

Try Google books but I don't know if you can download from there.
Monument books has Harry Potter and Kafka's The Trial in Khmer, among other titles.
I also found this blog;

i rarely read khmer fiction and moreover we don't have that many fictions except a few that we need to read when we are at school such as Tom Teav and Kolap Pailin. I can't help with this.
