Winds of Change
A while ago all business owners got a letter from City Hall in SHV to clear public lands such as sidewalks. Restaurants were asked to move their food displays back so they were within their property boundaries. Hotels usually don't occupy the sidewalks, if there are any to begin with, but they usually have their signs posted on public land.
So a couple of days ago some city hall type came by our hotel and told the receptionist we needed to move our 2 signs back to the wall. If we didn't do it they would remove them themselves. We swiftly moved our tall sign to the wall and left the small one where it is waiting to see what would happen. Experience taught us that issued directives usually took some time before they were enforced, if ever. But lo and behold, this morning, a work crew came by accompanied by 4 military police and quickly sawed off the small sign, about 1.50 m tall, threw it on their truck and disappeared. They said nary a word. It all happened within 5 - 10 minutes.
We believe they could have started their enforcement with the beach and the rear of the restaurants there. Those sites are an eyesore at the least, if not a health hazard. Trash collection and enforcement is still in a deplorable state. But no, those signs are surely more important. Word is that they want to widen the street (Tola Street where the White Palace is).
We are wondering what they will do with those huge gensets some hotels have outside their property? Those need to be moved inside too; but what if you do't have enough space?
Change is a-coming it seems.

Re: Winds of Change
Happened in Temple Town a few months back? Even Sokha, previously sacrosanct, had them cut off.

Don't take this badly, but are you the only ones to get your sign cut down ? Could mean anything or nothing. Did you forget to donate to the police Xmas party or something ?
Winds of change sometimes blow everything right back to how they were.(As you well know.) There's nothing like a bit of posturing to look busy and efficient. Just a bit of tidying up and beautifying the city probably - your sign was probably making the place look untidy.
As for the beach, I thought it was understood that the beach shacks will be bulldozed when the moment comes anyway. Until then i'm sure it's a good earner as is.
As an aside, PP are still "freeing" their sidewalks : https://cambodiaexpatsonline.com/newswor ... t6250.html
Good luck.

Is Tola St heading the way of the Makara St runway they just built? In Paris they have wide boulevards so you can fire your cannons at hoi polloi.

Re: Winds of Change
It's about time this happened. Hopefully they will widen Serendipty Road, Beach Road and Mithona Street. I've seen lots of signs removed (and A Boards) removed down Mithona street in the last few days and the place looks much better for it. 7 Makara Street.. the one widened earlier this year is looking a lot better than it ever did and slowly landlords/locals are resurfacing the gaps left by the road construction. And the DoE have street cleaners working all over town not just the backpacker centre of beach road area removing even large plies of fly tipped garbage as well as general litter picking up.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
