Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Working on a minimum wage ... $153 for all.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

The Ministry of Labor said yesterday that it was working with experts and International Labor Organization (ILO) officials to create a draft law laying out the monthly minimum wage for workers in a variety of fields outside the garment and textile industry, which late last month agreed to set its minimum wage at $153...

Yang Sophorn, the president of the Cambodian Alliance of Trade Unions, told Khmer Times yesterday that she was not aware of any draft law on a universal minimum wage and said the ministry needs to involve unions in the process for the law to be truly effective.

[Meanwhile, not everyone has had to wait for their payrise...]

Prime Minister HE said his own salary, now 3.6 million riel (about $900) a month, would almost treble to 10 million (about $2,500).
Ministers will receive 4.5 million riel ($1,115), secretaries of state 3.5 million (about $850), undersecretaries of state 2.8 million ($700) and some 2,500 assistants and advisers will receive an extra 80,000 riel ($20) a month.

A woman is paid a salary not much more than $150 as a f/t teacher - she is completing a degree at XXXXX University in XXXXX

She rents a room that works out at $70/month and she shares the room with 2 others

This is the life of many here - and she is not one of the poor and desperate at all

I just don't see how a leader of a country can live on $2500. a month. Must have taken some lessons on economizing from Hillary when she was here a couple years ago.

They didn't exactly see eye-to-eye.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
