Wildlife Trafficking in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Re: Wildlife trafficking
As a Word Birder I believe the Bird in the first photo is a Harris Hawk. ( Parabutea Unicinctus ) Native to North and South America. Breeds from Southwestern United States To Chile, Central Argentine and Brazil. It prey is small birds, snakes and lizards. They also feed on carrion. WTF It's doing in Cambodia is any ones guess. They are sold around the globe as a ideal species for falconry. That's my guess. The other species is debatable, as It's size can not be determined by the photo. But I suspect I't's a Female/Juvenile Shikra. ( Accipiter Badius ) Common resident in South East Asia. LEAVE WILDLIFE ALONE. Put Donald Trump in shackles instead. Not Happy.

Re: Wildlife trafficking
That's interesting, I restricted my search to birds in this region and couldn't find anything similar, but I agree that it's a Harris Hawk. I've often seen Shikras and understand they vary a lot in appearance but the only ones I've seen here have been very light-colored, like a really pale gray, and don't display those variations.YORKIE wrote: ↑Fri Apr 13, 2018 9:55 pm As a Word Birder I believe the Bird in the first photo is a Harris Hawk. Silence, exile, and cunning.
Re: Wildlife trafficking
Sorry for the Donald Trump rant, I tend to blame him for everything these days. Yes, you are correct with your observations of Shikra. The bird looks looks Goshawk size to me, but, obviously not Crested Goshawk. Because of this I am not ruling out Changeable Hawk Eagle ( Spizaetus Cirrbatus ) Identifying birds from a photograph can be a pain in the arse sometimes.

LOL, for once, no. @ GM, oh ye of little faith...
I was responding to markd's comment, somehow our posts crossed.
Thanks for the ID suggestions, I thought the brown one was a yellow-billed kite or something, but I posted snake eagle because I didn't consider foreign species.

In fact on FB a friend of mine did mention that it's probably a foreign bird.
Maybe I'll pop by sometime and simply ask the owner...
