Wild meat sold openly at Stung Treng market

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

No leopards or tigers left in Cambodia.

No salties.

No Siamese crocodiles/

No gharials.

Few black bears.

Few Mekong catfish.

Few pangolins.

Long list of animals no longer seen here.

So yes, there is something VERY wrong with eating wild meat.

Perhaps Nick Marx, the Director of Wild Aid should explain this to you.

At least then we can have a more informed perspective.
Totally agree with TG. ALL wild animals in Cambodia are, or will become, endangered species if they continue to be hunted for commercial gains. I am not against local/indigenous people hunting animals for food, but the problem is that it's much more lucrative for indigenous hunters to sell the meat to restaurants or wildmeat sellers at the market.
Also, just because eating wild meat is an ancient custom, that doesn't mean that it's a good thing for Cambodia today. I am quite impressed that the younger generation are realising that times change and that some species need to be protected from hunting.

For all of human history, people have hunted and eaten wild animals. This won't change, no matter how much it offends your delicate European sensibilities. Hurling infantile personal insults at all those who disagree with you won't change things either.

There should also be a total ban on wild fish being caught.

What, you would deprive the Khmer of prahok?
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

There are some leopards left although it's doubtful there will be for long. The only wild populations of Siamese Crocodiles are here is the Cardamons and in a small part of Indonesian Borneo. Gharials aren't native here.

Don't forget the Siamese crocodile eggs found in Sre Ambel, Koh Kong last year.

My soldiers homies gave my friend * a rabbit today. I'm sure it came from a pet shop and isn't a Burmese hare (Lepus peguensis), which are actually becoming more common and bordering on being pests in this area, as they favour deforested habitat and natural predators have gone.
