Why not Montagnards ?

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Why not Montagnards ?

Post by prahkeitouj »

I wonder why our government doesn't allow Montagnards to live in Cambodia like Australian refugees?

But those Montagnards are pitiful. Sending them to Vietnam is like sending them to the hell. They ban only Montagnards? How many foreigners have expire visa and how many illegal imagration of Vietnamese in Cambodia? We don't send them to UN or something else?

I think Cambodia should take them, but the government only cares about money and they have no money. I agree with you completely though, it isn't right.

I think so. but if they are not Vietnamese 's foe, I wonder if Cambodia government will use the forces to stopping Montaganards a crossing or not. Why they are seeking the villagers who help Montagnards ?

I think the government wants to make Vietnam happy and they want to escape their obligations to refugees. If the montagnards never officially make it to Cambodia they aren't technically refugees.

I don't think they will be able to stay in Cambodia long enough to pass for a Cambodian. They will also need identity papers.
These people are very poor so their needs don't count for much for the Cambodian and Vietnamese governments.

If they could get to Australia, maybe they would get sent here and Cambodia would welcome them ? It's all a bit crazy.

Because, like the Uighurs, they are political refugees from a benefactor country that wants them back. Cambodia's relationship with these benefactor nations is more important to the government than pleasing the UN by taking them in.

If a Vietnamese person learned Khmer and never spoke Vietnamese in public, would you be fooled into believe he is Khmer?

Seems like ethnically they are closer to the Ratanakiri hilltribes than to Vietnamese or Khmer.

Since October, more than 100 Christian Montagnards – an indigenous group from Vietnam’s Central Highlands – have risked their lives by crossing the border into Cambodia to flee alleged religious and political persecution.
There is certainly a feeling of solidarity from the Jarai villagers toward these refugees, and they are taking risks to protect them.
But residents of Lom village said the troops’ real mission was clear.

“First, they are here to stop Montagnards from crossing into Cambodia anymore. Second, they are looking for people helping the Montagnards,” said an ethnic Jarai villager, who has been assisting the asylum seekers in recent months and requested anonymity for fear of reprisals.

The villager, who continues to help Montagnards still hiding in the province, said it was wrong for authorities to seek their deportation.

“The Montagnards are mistreated in Vietnam, and if they are arrested and deported, they will be persecuted more and more.”
Brave villagers. :thumb:
