White Guy Robbed on Monivong Blvd

Breaking news from Cambodia can be found here. CEO often finds Khmer news and translates it into English for our readers if it is interesting to expats, locals, Cambodians living abroad and anyone who wants to stay informed of the latest local and international news stories about Cambodia and our neighbors in South East Asia. There are many sources for Khmer news articles and they can all be found here in one place. Most of the media comes out of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap or Sihanoukville, but we cover national Cambodian news from all provinces.

Phnom Penh: An identified foreign man got his bag snatched while he was on the way to the Phnom Penh International Airport at 6 am on June 21, on Street 217, Sangkat Beung Salang, Khan Toul Kok, Phnom Penh.

According to the foreign victim, who can speak Khmer a little bit, he is a businessman who has lived in Cambodia for many years, and that morning he took a Passapp tuk-tuk from his home to the airport to fly back to his country. During the ride, suddenly there were 4 guys on 2 motorbikes that came up beside the tuktuk to snatch his bag which contained $ 30,000. The victim tried to pull his bag back from the thieves, but he was unable to get it back.

After the attack, the victim went to file a complaint at Steung Meanchey1 police post, but the police didn't want to accept the case because it did not happen in their jurisdiction so they sent the victim to Beung Salang Police Station to file his complaint.

Had been doing business in Cambodia for many years? This kid looks like he's in his early 20s. Sounds like loose lips sink ships. Pretty hard to get a bag pulled out of your hands from people on motos when you're sitting in the back of a Passapp Tuk Tuk.

.. from his home to the airport to fly back to his country.
..to snatch his bag which contained $ 30,000.
What's the maximum amount of currency you're allowed to depart Cambodia with?
The idea that seeing the world is going from place to place to look at obvious things is an illusion natural to dull minds.

Uhm, who takes US$ 30,000 with him on the way to the airport, apparently wanting to fly to some destination?
That amount would certainly raise some red flags with the Khmer cops, no?
Especially since the guy apparently has been 'in business' for many years. What business(es), exactly?
Oh, wait... Khmer and cops...

And, uhm, if you want to take that amount of money with you, why take a PassApp tuktuk? Why not a taxi? He comes across as a cheapskate which does not add up with the money he carried.

Another thing: IF he has been 'in business' for many years here, I would expect a few people here recognizing him.

I always get a taxi to/from the airport everytime, and I'm certainly not carrying $30000 :)

No, 10.000$ is how much you can bring without having to prove where it comes from.

As long as you can prove that the money is legit there is no limit to how much cash you can travel with.

I knew him way back, he was around here in 2005 but I can't remember the last time I saw him. No idea what was going on with the bag though.
