More stories from the White Building:

Businesses vacate White Building
As families begin to move out of the iconic White Building, small business owners who have operated in the capital’s dilapidated landmark are facing tough decisions.
For Neang, a 37-year-old vendor who sells everything from 1-litre bottles of gasoline to cases of beer and cellphone cards from her corner stall in the White Building, the decision to accept the buyout from the Japanese firm that will tear down the housing complex and build a 21-storey building in its place, has put future business operations on unsure footing.

“It’s hard for me to move my business to another location and I am concerned that I will not be able to earn as much as I do here,” she said.
“But I have no choice,” she added, watching her household belongings and dismantled vendor stall being loaded into moving trucks for relocation.

Neang, who declined to give her full name, said that her stall in the White Building netted a daily profit of about $30 from selling goods to the building’s residents and people passing by late at night on the congested Sothearos Boulevard. The money primarily goes to supporting her two children, she said...

Party to bless departing tenants
Residents of almost 300 units in Phnom Penh’s White Building have moved out to make way for Japanese developers, while government officials yesterday threw a party to celebrate their departure.
The party involved a Buddhist ceremony with 44 monks, two tonnes of Khmer noodles and free drinks.

According to the Land Ministry’s official Facebook page, residents of 284 units have now left and received payments from the investment firm Arakawa. Others have agreed a sale price but will not leave until next month.
There are a total of 493 units in the 1960s building, which was part of the country’s first experiment in social housing.

Phum Mouy village chief Hun Sarat, who is also a White Building resident, said the Buddhist ceremony was intended to help protect people until they can find a new home.
She said: “We dedicated the religious ceremony to the Neak Ta spirit that has cared for this area since 1979 and prayed for happiness in the future. We are happy with what the Land Minister has done for us.”

One resident on the White Building’s ground floor said she and about 20 other families have still not agreed to sell...

Going, going, gone soon. The demolition of the White Building is scheduled to commence on 17 July.
Among other things, this will undoubtedly perturb traffic in this area of Phnom Penh for quite some time.

White Building demolition soon to begin

Wed, 12 July 2017
The Ministry of Land Management yesterday announced that the decades-old White Building in the capital will be demolished starting July 17 in order to make way for a new 21-storey structure.
The announcement was released late yesterday evening and said the process of taking down the crumbling structure will cause some disturbances for those living close to the White Building.
“This demolition will lead to a disruption to the people living around the location as well as passers-by and will require carefulness and cooperation,” the short notification reads.

The dilapidated structure will make way for a 21-storey building that will be constructed by Japanese firm Arakawa Co, for an estimated cost of $70 million...

I dont think it will be difficult to knock down. The green steel fence will make the neighbourhood look much nicer.

"The Last Day of The White Building"
Taken by Amazing Cambodia 16-07-2017

After today, this historical 60's iconic masterpiece will disappear from Phnom Penh's municipal map, and the local young generations, along with foreign tourists, will never witness how it looks like again.

Well to be fair it looked pretty fucking awful, especially in the center of the city. It was like a miniature version of Kowloon Walled City, and that's long gone for similar reasons.

A representative from Arakawa Co, who didn’t want to reveal his name, told Post Property the demolition of the White Building will be ongoing for the next few months.
“The demolition of the building will take three to four months before construction of the new building starts,” he said.

The 493 families living in the crumbling White Building recently moved out after agreeing to accept $1,400 per square metre from the Land Management Ministry for their apartments. The White Building is now being bordered off for safety purposes ahead of its imminent demolition.
