Western girls in Bikinis degrading Buddha Statue

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

If it is in Cambodia, taking offense makes a certain amount of sense. It is after all their country. But if they are beginning to search the world for examples of infidel's insulting their religion so they can get all offended, they are heading down a dangerous path.
Cambodians and their Geography is awful, we all know that lol some Cambodian probably came across the picture online and thought it was Cambodia
i think if its anywhere in south east asia though their views should still be valid, just because the picture was actually took in neibouring thailand/vienam it doesnt make the insult any less so does it really

most of the comments are talking about the insult to the buddha/buddhism not insult to cambodia, i do remember reading a comment that also stated they didnt want that kind of behaviour in the kingdom, i guess they dont have to go searching the interweb when barrangs are getting naked at angkor wat and what not lol

So LTO, if it had happened in say the Philippines, involving a statue of the Jesus, then you are suggesting that only Philippino's should get upset? And if it hit, say Brazilian media, that they would be just trying to sensationalise things? How about when (not if) the American media picked it up? Still no real right to get offended, because it didn't happen in their country? Even though it is their religious icon that was denigrated?

I was born, christened and raised a Catholic. If three hot girls want to masturbate with crucifixes - I'll enjoy the show. The idea that a religion can be tarnished by a "sacrilegious act" is a joke. Has anyone actually read any of the Buddha's teachings? He'd be shrugging this off and going on to more important things - not making a show of being offended (particularly not on behalf of other people - at least make your "I'm offended" you own for pity's sake).

Buddhism and the Buddha are not damaged by this any more than Muhammad and Islam (PBUH) are damaged by someone burning a Koran or Jesus and Christianity are damaged by a sacrilegious print. Petty people may be offended but the religions themselves are far more enduring than single acts of silliness could ever damage them. People who think otherwise need to spend more time examining their own fragile faith and less time criticizing others.

There are and always will be lunatics; they'll attach themselves to any cause where they get to kill or to martyr themselves. I lived and worked in the Islamic world for 5 years. I lived opposite the University of Hate (Imam University - where they train all the Wahhabi clerics in the world). 99.9999% of Muslims have no axe to grind. One of my team members was a direct descendant of Muhammad (PBUH) and he was a bisexual dude with an encyclopedic knowledge of Islam. My other team Muslim team member had grown up in London, played football for Bristol City and was way more wrapped up in his faith than the other guy. Both of them used to spend hours debating religion with me (I'm agnostic) there were no threats, no angry words, they were just baffled that I didn't believe in God and worried that my soul was going to burn when I died. They weren't offended when I laughed at religion because why should they be? The majority of Muslims are like the rest of us - trying to get along in life.

As for Islamic extremists? You might want to visit Northern Myanmar where Buddhist extremists are slaughtering Muslims left right and center for kicks - the plight of the Rohingya is world famous now (check out those lovely death camps in Buddhist Thailand for their refugees too). Then head to Southern Thailand where Buddhists are trampling over Muslims. Or to the Philippines where the Muslim minority has been crapped on by Christians for more than a century. There are no infallible religions and there are plenty of nutcases (see American evangelical Christians and their abortion clinic bombings and attacks or even The Westboro Baptists - who should be deemed clinically insane) of every creed, colour and faith.

Disrespecting religion should never be a crime. Spreading hate, fear, pain and death on the other hand are all illegal in most of the world already...

Using the Buddha Statue as heating fuel
During the Teng Dynasty, Dharma Master Dan Xia (literally, Red Twilight) used to be a candidate for the civil service examination. But he got a "calling" and later became a Buddhist Monk instead.
On a cold winter night, a big snow storm hit the city and the temple where Dan Xia served as a Monk got snowed in. Cut off from outside traffic, the coal delivery man could not get to the Zen Monastery. Soon it ran out of heating fuel after a few days and everybody was shivering in the cold. The monks could not even cook their meals.
Dan Xia began to remove the wooden Buddha Statues from the display and put them into the fireplace.
"What are you doing?" the monks were shocked to see that the holy Buddha Statues were being burnt inside the fire place. "You are burning our holy religious artifacts! You are insulting the Buddha!"
"Are these statues alive and do they have any Buddha nature?" asked Master Dan Xia.
"Of course not," replied the monks. "They are made of wood. They cannot have Buddha Nature."
"OK. Then they are just pieces of firewood and therefore can be used as heating fuel," said Master Dan Xia. "Can you pass me another piece of firewood please? I need some warmth."
The next day, the snow storm had gone and Dan Xia went into town and brought back some replacement Buddha Statues. After putting them on the displays, he began to kneel down and burn incense sticks to them.
"Are you worshiping firewood?" ask the monks who are confused for what he was doing.
"No. I am treating these statues as holy artifacts and am honouring the Buddha." replied Dan Xia. http://www.purifymind.com/StoryBuddhaStatue.htm

For around the first 500 years of Buddhism, the Buddha wasn't even represented in human form. An empty throne, Bodhi tree or wheel was used instead. The use of Buddha statues emerged from Hellenist/ Greco-Bactrian kingdoms in the area of modern Afghanistan. You can see the influence of Greek art in the wavy hair/ drapery of the older Buddha statues.

Buddha head from Gandhara (modern day Peshawar in North-West Frontier Province in Pakistan).

Cambodian Buddha statues can have a ghost spirit in the base - so watch out for that!
Silence, exile, and cunning.
