Public warned of new rubbish payment scam in Phnom Penh
Voun Dara | Publication date 12 August 2020 | 22:04 ICT
Phnom Penh officials are warning the public not to be cheated by people posing as waste management payment collectors.

Residents can only pay for rubbish collection services online or at banks and microfinance institutions.

Phnom Penh Municipal Hall spokesman Meth Meas Pheakdey told The Post on Wednesday that the city administration has recently received information that opportunists were using the scam. “Our first step is to inform citizens of this,” he said.

On Tuesday, the authority released a notice that said: “In recent days, a group of opportunists posed as Phnom Penh Waste Management Authority officials to cheat clients out of collection service payments.”

The administration said from January 1, rubbish collection services have not been included in electricity bills. Customers are required to pay the service fee electronically or at banks, microfinance institutions and partner payment agencies.

The administration said the service payment can be made via Aceleda, ABA, Wing, AMK, WB Finance, Prince Bank and Sathapana Bank Plc or other payment agencies via eMONEY, Lyhour Weiluy, Pi Pay, and Dara Pay.

If customers pay by cheque, they have to write “Phnom Penh Solid Waste Management Authority” on it.

Those who encounter potential fraud should report it to the authorities by calling 087 258 835 or to local police directly.
