Violence in Sihanoukville

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

You're right, fair enough.

I just thought these kinds of stories show how it's got a long running reputation for being a seedy backpacker beach town.

I also think that locals are crazy aggressive around Dolphin Shack at night.

Here's an SMS I received from a buddy last time I was down there partying late night. I left, and got this from my buddy, who stayed a little later..

"About 5 minutes after you all left, some obese man walked into the bar, had about 5sec worth of words with a dude at the bar before knocking him out. The dude at the bar fell backwards and hit his head. I went to look at him and on top of the blood he seemed to be pretty bad. Shit cleared out right quick."

"The only people who didn't seem phased were the whores...... They literally just shook a bottle of beach sand onto the floor so no one would slip on the big blood puddle...... We left after that..."

LoL, after reading that again and remembering all the random violence I've seen down there, I feel a warning from the US Embassy was way over due.

I'm still waiting for the American Embassy to alert everyone about the dangers of Golden Sorya Mall and G-Pub.

Hahah! Shieeett. :beer3:

Yes, because we are all doomed if we don't think like fucking Green Berets.... %)

Those two casinos won't let Khmer in without a barang "escort". It's the drugs that are sucking their money away and making them desperate.
Ummm... really? I know you live down there an all, but this just sounds like bullshit. I don't really know either, but don't some rich Khmer go there to play? I am sure their Range Rovers are enough to get them in without a white person present. :?:

If you keep reading past that, the rich khmer are the exception... and fairly rare there actually. A few, but not enough to get the cops shutting them down. They generally go to much fancier casinos than the ones he's talking about. But the rich Khmer aren't the bag snatchers and ice heads he's talking about either. I've yet to hear of someone getting their purse snatched by a guy leaning out of a passing rangerover.

Agree with you 100% there mate.
And also, for you fella's that think Sihanoukville has some sort of monopoly on random violence, google "Australia coward punch". Its that bad over there, not just are the media campaigning for a king hit to be re-labelled, many pollies and police are backing the call.
OD, I hate to disagree with you mate, but your call on Khmers and gambling in casino's is completely wrong. MANY, MANY taxi girls ( and others) spend( lose ) a fortune in the casino's here and are allowed in, no questions asked, no escort needed, whenever they want. I know of 2 cases where the G.F's of my mates have lost thousands of dollars and have been given credit to lose more One case ended up with death threats and all sorts of shit. They can walk in, unescorted, anytime, as easy as you or I can if they have some upfront cash to play with.

Odd, because Fortuna was standing on it when they tried to go in.... so they came back and got me. At that time there were no taxi girls/etc in there (they generally stand out).

Back on track here- What happens if you pepper spray or use a stun gun on a Khmer person and the police get involved? If it was in self-defense, are you still going to get into big trouble? Ditch the pepper spray and act like you have no idea what happened?

I am just wondering how much trouble a foreigner would get into, if any, for using non-lethal self defense methods that don't involve punching or kicking.

Regardless, I would rather deal with the consequences of pepper spraying a group of 4 or 5 Khmer kids trying to attack me than be head stomped on the ground repeatedly.

Not sure, but I'll say that if you try and pepper spray a group of 4 or 5 people you'll likely get a face full as well. It's decent for 1 on 1, not great on a group.

Same for a stungun really, because of the need of physical contact.

You might be able to hit one and deter the others... or it may enrage them further and make the beating worse.
