Vietnamese man caught assisting border jumpers from Cambodia twice

Authorities in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang found that a local 39-year-old man had organized the illegal entry of three people to Vietnam from Cambodia earlier this week.

A task force for COVID-19 prevention and control of the guard station at Long Binh border gate in An Giang’s An Phu District detected three men entering Vietnam in Long Binh town from Cambodia on a boat at around 11:30 pm on December 5.

At the guard station, the three men were identified as Vo Van Trieu, 39, from Long Binh town, and Truong Huu Luan, 18, and Phi Huy Hoang, 16, both from Do Son District in the northern Vietnamese city of Hai Phong.

According to Luan and Hoang, Trieu helped them make illegal entry to Vietnam from Cambodia.

Specifically, Trieu said that a woman named Phuong, working at Casino Galaxy in Sampuoe Puon Commune, Koh Thom District, located in the Cambodian province of Kan Dal [Kandal], on December 5 promised to pay him for transporting her two guests to Vietnam.

One week earlier, Phuong had also asked him to help another person illicitly cross border to Vietnam.

Phuong had yet to pay Trieu after the two trips, the 39-year-old man said.

Dinh Quang Diem, head of the guard station of Long Binh border gate, on Monday said that his unit was completing procedures to launch legal proceedings into the case related to Trieu with the charge of “organizing illegal entry.”

In addition, Luan and Hoang were imposed with administrative fines of VND3 million (US$129) and VND1.5 million ($65), respectively.
