Immigration police at Phnom Penh International Airport arrested a Venezuelan national – the third arrested since September – for allegedly trafficking nearly two kilograms of cocaine from Brazil to Cambodia, a police official said yesterday.

The arrest was made after the 28-year-old suspect, Mejia Neilin Coromoto, landed at the airport at 6pm on Monday. Police were suspicious and found cocaine hidden in buttons after a search of her luggage.

General Mak Chito, the deputy National Police commissioner in charge of cracking down on drugs, said the suspect was being questioned by police, who were trying to find out if she was part of a drug trafficking network.
“She is under questioning by our police,” he said. “And we are searching for her connections.”

Police found 1,791.28 grams of cocaine inside 109 buttons. Ms. Coromoto flew from Brazil’s Sao Paulo and transited in Ethiopia and Bangkok before arriving in Phnom Penh as her final destination...

Tourist denies drug mule charges

A 28-year-old Venezuelan woman went on trial in Phnom Penh Municipal Court accused of bringing nearly three kilos of cocaine from Brazil to Cambodia.

Presiding judge Theam Chanpiseth said tourist Mejias Neilin Coromoto was arrested in February last year by Interior Ministry anti-drug police in collaboration with custom and excise and immigration police at Phnom Penh International Airport.

Ms Coromoto was charged with drug transportation and trafficking. She faces from 30 years to life in jail if convicted.

Mr Chanpiseth said that after her arrest, police seized about three kilos of cocaine from her.

Court deputy prosecutor Long Cheap said Ms Coromoto was not the drug ringleader but she was hired by a Nigerian suspect named Jonatun, who is still at large.

A 28-year-old Venezuelan woman was jailed for 30 years yesterday after being convicted of bringing nearly three kilos of cocaine from Brazil to Cambodia.

Tourist Mejias Neilin Coromoto was arrested in February last year by Interior Ministry anti-drug police in collaboration with custom and excise and immigration police at Phnom Penh International Airport.

She was charged by Phnom Penh Municipal Court with drug trafficking and could have been jailed for life. Presiding Judge Theam Chanpiseth instead sentenced her to 30 years.

“She is sentenced to 30 years in prison,” the judge said. “The court has also fined her 20 million riel ($5,000) to be put into the state’s budget.”

Deputy prosecutor Long Cheap said Ms Coromoto was not a drug ringleader. She was hired by a Nigerian suspect named Jonatun, who is still at large, to bring the cocaine from Brazil to Cambodia.
The drugs were destined to be sent to Thailand, he noted.

Mr Cheap said Ms Coromoto confessed at the police station that Jonatun promised her 30 percent of the wholesale value of the drugs when she brought them to Cambodia.
