The villagers went down into the dirty canal waters to search for the man, but could not find him. The local authorities were called to come to the scene immediately.

Went down into the dirty canal? I like to think of myself as someone you'd probably want to be around in the event of a crisis, but even I would draw the line at this. There's no way in the world you'd find me swimming around in a river of warm shit playing the hero. Even if they did manage to find him and drag him out, surely he'd have swallowed so much, he'd be a walking petri-dish of diseases that would more than likely kill him a few days later anyway?
The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never allow the dumb ones to lead the pack.
