Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Two traffic officers fired for corruption, and getting filmed by foreigners

Phnom Penh: According to a report by the National Police Commission on Thursday, two traffic police have been either suspended or fired, (it is unclear if the sanction is temporary or permanent), by the Phnom Penh Municipal Road Traffic Police Office. The two policemen were filmed by some foreign vloggers who were asked for $20 for going through a red light.

The incident has been shown on social media networks and there has been much criticism of police corruption. That is presumably why the officials on high have decided to make a public example of these two.

Nice! I was hoping it was going to be those two fuckers at the corner of Norodom and MTT as you turn right heading to Aeon. Time to strap a GoPro to my noggin.

So to spell it out for noobs, they are not in trouble for extorting money from foreigners, they are in trouble for having their actions caught on camera. It actually pays, if you're traveling in pairs, for the second person to whip out the smartphone and at least look like you're filming, but use discretion on this one - could prove dangerous.

If you watch the video, which is really long so the cop part is just one small scene, they were asking for $20...$10.... and then they noticed the camera and it was just get the fuck out of here, I didn't see nothing on the cop's part.

A shortened version:

"Life is too important to take seriously."

"Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh."

Cool thing is that even if you get busted down in rank or fired you can always buy a new name and job tomorrow with the money you saved up from uh ... tips.. lol
"The revolution did more than legally create the United States; it transformed American society... Far from remaining monarchical, hierarchy-ridden subjects on the margin of civilization, Americans had become, almost overnight, the most liberal, the most democratic, the most commercial minded, and the most modern people in the world." - Gordon S.
