Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Stuart Glass, the "Jolly Pirate" Canada - the tall one standing. Shot at sea off Koh Tang 1978, his body put to sea.
Kerry Hamill, NZ - "The Navigator" by the stars, a serious man. seated
(and his then girlfriend who was not on their final voyage)
Kerry and british Ian Dewhurst were tortured and killed at Toul Sleng. (which is why i sat in on about 50 days of Duch's trial)
I took these photographs in Darwin Harbour in 1977, and spent time with them again in Bali a few months later - just before they departed on the final voyage.
Two of the best men i have ever met.
And the tiny Foxy Lady (malasian) one of the best boats - not a straight line about her, just like a perfect woman.

"Hail Ho, me hearties
and set them sails
We are a'following the Siren's song
right over to...
the other side"

That was Stuart. I remember him singing that from half way up the mast, so clearly still today.
And he was right.

Family to retrace brother's sailing journey to Cambodia before his murder by Khmer Rouge

Kerry Hamill was a great letter-writer, so his family knew something was wrong when his carefully penned correspondence stopped in 1978.

The young New Zealander accidentally sailed into Cambodian waters and was then captured, tortured and killed by the Khmer Rouge at the S-21 prison in Phnom Penh, where thousands died.

His brother Rob Hamill and his family now want to retrace Kerry's journey, as a way to heal and raise awareness about the plight of at least 2 million Cambodians killed under the regime. "People talk of closure [but] grief is an ongoing process," Rob said.
"I'm connecting with my brother in many different ways. This is one of the ways. Coming here to Darwin is really special."
"The loss of 2 to 3 million lives in that terrible time, in that beautiful country with beautiful people and culture, [this is] a small way of acknowledging their losses as well."

For the past four years, Rob, who has been a champion rower for New Zealand, his wife Rachel and two of their sons, Ivan and Declan, have been sailing around Australia and the world. The trip from Darwin to Cambodia will be the final leg of their journey.

Kerry had been in Darwin during the rebuilding period after Cyclone Tracy in the 1970s and he purchased his yacht Foxy Lady there before setting off.

Two other men on board the yacht also died. Canadian Stuart Glass was shot, and British teacher John Dewhirst was taken with Kerry.

They [had] travelled to Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand and had dropped Kerry's girlfriend off in Singapore.
The yacht was later blown off course.

"They took shelter behind an island called Koh Tang about 50 kilometres offshore [from Cambodian mainland], and on the other side of the island was a Khmer Rouge naval gun base," Rob said.
