Traffic Cops get to keep 70% of fines

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Fun Factoid: Some people believe that they save gas by keeping their lights turned off at night.
It's true, but it's so little gas it's not worth bothering.

Cops keeping a % of the fines has been the norm for many, many years.
Did they stop doing it and just brought it back again, or what?

A few years back they announced that fines would no longer be paid on the street - a ticket would be issued and the fine would be paid at the station.

At that time (was it 2015 or 2016?), there was a three month long crackdown on drink driving, speeding and other trivial traffic offences. Fines also increased.

It was then, not now, that they incentivised the cops with the keep 75% carrot.

I dont see why that would be something new with this? Police could not lie and ask for money before?

My personal experience with police diriving ALOT here cross provinces, citys, PP etc is that the police are not that bad. They never stop me for some bullshit reason. They can just stop 10 khmer guys in the same time who actually broke the law instead of arguing with me for 30min.

Are you sure about that? I'd say it was a good ten years before that (at least).

I'm quite certain. Ten years ago was another story.

But, around 2016 or so, they ramped up speeding tests and drink driving tests.

Lasted all of six month, but an important part of that initiative was to give each station 70 or 75% of all revenue raised in order to incentivise the cops to actually write the tickets.

reason for scrapping big fines for drunk driving was it could make people 'angry'

Don't worry yourself too much about that, they will make it near equal if possible, like, one of the times we were stopped, and rightly so, because she decided riding pillion she would remove her helmet, $5 fine, should have been $2.50 but would not give me a ticket, if he had you can carry on with the offence of no helmet for the rest of the day. So around the corner same again, this time she argued with the two traffic cops, she being an officer in the military police, $2.50 like you just charged the other two Khmer, he switched on my lights, $5 dollars, firm was his answer.
Always "hope" but never "expect".
