Tourist Helicopter Crashes into Huge Bird

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Helicopter strikes bird, makes urgent island landing
19 March 2018
A private helicopter carrying two French nationals and their Cambodian translator made an emergency landing in Kampong Chhnang province on Saturday after hitting a bird in Boribor district.

Provincial police chief Loch Vannara said that no one was killed or injured during the incident.
“They immediately landed on an island in Kampong Preah Koki commune after the helicopter hit a big bird which caused the glass on the helicopter to break,” he added. “They could not continue to fly safely.”

Mr Vannara said the helicopter departed from Phnom Penh, but declined to identify the company or the names of the people within the helicopter.

Every hour of helicopter flight needs 10+ hrs of maitenence on the ground, fixed wing is far less. Would never take a rotary flight in south east asia.

Why aren't there more crashes if it's so bad?

Spoke nothing of crashes or anything bad. Rotary flights require much more training and on the ground maitenence for flying when compared to fixed wing. The ratio of fixed wing to rotary flights is astronomically different so you rarely read about helicopter crashes. They happen plenty. More can go wrong with rotary flights and often does.
