Tigers declared extinct in Cambodia, but...

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Tigers declared extinct in Cambodia, but...

Post by Anchor Moy »

... there is a plan to reintroduce them into Mondulkiri forests.
Tigers are “functionally extinct” in Cambodia, conservationists conceded for the first time on Wednesday, as they launched a bold action plan to reintroduce the big cats to the kingdom’s forests.

Cambodia’s dry forests used to be home to scores of Indochinese tigers but the WWF said intensive poaching of both tigers and their prey had devastated the numbers of the big cats.

The last tiger was seen on camera trap in the eastern Mondulkiri province in 2007, it said.

“Today, there are no longer any breeding populations of tigers left in Cambodia, and they are therefore considered functionally extinct,” the conservation group said in a statement.

In an effort to revive the population, the Cambodian government last month approved a plan to reintroduce the creatures into the Mondulkiri protected forest in the far of east the country...

Good idea,

Inevitably, although without proper control and monitoring, unfortunately one would think it will just have the effect of resurrecting the poaching trade again.....

Even so, Is there even enough suitable prey for the tigers in order to sustain what would be considered a 'normal' population?

My thoughts as well. The government see some lucrative business paid for by more foreigners.

For example. the wild life conserve that was set up near Kampot a few years ago supplies a certain Khmer restaurant with exotic wild game.

The only real predators needed are probably people, Asian people as they seem to eat everything but cheese. They hand that out a lot though..

Funny that, I heard about that 'restaurant' actually!

Maybe a time to considering in going into the restaurant business, a newly created niche market..... I can see it now.....

'Braised Tiger marinated in red wine, oregano, black pepper and lemon zest'...... :stir:

Plus it's a scientific fact that if you boil tiger penis in water along with some rhinocerous horn and bear bile into a tea and drink it, you gain super sexual powers!

Idiocy. Big game disappeared before the tigers did. The forests from 2007 were very different from now. I'd argue (uneducated guess based on my travels) that the forests have shrunk by a good 25-40% since then. If they couldn't sustain them then, how can they sustain them now? Half of Mondilkiri is now rubber plantations anyways...
